Why did Sosuke call his mom by her first name?

At the very beginning of the movie, when he calls Lisa by her first name, it made me think that she was his older sister. It took a comment from one of the other characters to make me realize that she was his mom.
Does anyone know if there's some cultural significance to this, or if it has no deeper meaning at all and is simply done for fun?

He also refers to his father by "Koichi" as well, at least he does in my subbed version...I've never seen this in any other subbed movie.

I wondered the same thing, especially since their relationship seemed to be really strong. At first I thought maybe she wasn't his birth mother, or something, but that's never stopped a Miyazaki character before. I haven't watched the dub, but if that carried over, then that's pretty weird.

I thought that he may have been adopted or something until Sosuke claims that "Lisa fed me her milk as well."

I know a little German... he's right over there.
