An idiotic and utterly beyond stupid ending. (spoilers)
This movie's ending is probably one of the biggest wall-bangers I've ever watched, even for a Sci-fi flick. Not only was it abrupt and fairly idiotic, but portions of it actually contradicted the stuff we learned in the rest of the movie! Not just ignored - though there was some of that too - but went completely against 'canon.'
1) The legless shop owner who gave them the game said that it had to be passed on before the witch would grant the winners' wishes. He claimed that was the only reason he let Jason buy it - so he could 'win' and get his legs back. But Jason got his wish granted even though he refused to give the game to the other guy. In fact, he's willing to be shot rather than let the man take the game, even though he's planning on wishing that none of it ever happened in the first place!
2) When Jason and Erica "re-join" the game and she gets a death card, he freaks out and insists he can protect her even after he's already won. Considering that they've already decided he'll wish for it all to be undone - and thus bring everyone back to life - it's pretty stupid for him to freak out that late. And wasn't it stated somewhere that all the death cards had to be fufilled before the game would grant the winner's wish? But he continues to whine about having lost all his other friends while ignoring the fact that Erica HAS to die before he can bring them back.
3) And the biggest headdesk of it all, Jason's wish / his utter stupidity. After all the time he had to consider the possibilities - and his worrying over them having to get the 'wish' exactly right - he never considers that he might forget what happened if she rewinds time, or even to make sure that his friends would still be alive when they went back.
Those were the main problems I remember; there were probably more (and definitely not just related to the storyline) but I haven't watched it in a while, so my memory isn't the greatest. Still, it kills me that actors / actresses as awesome as Eliza Dushku and even Mike Vogel would sign on for a script this braindead, and movie companies continue to throw money at these productions.
