pick through Floriane's trash after she left Floriane's house? She stayed in Floriane's house until early morning. They said their goodbyes and Floriane threw out a black trash bag. Marie waited for her to go inside and then returned and took the trash bag out the garbage bin. She then took it home and took a bite out of an already eaten apple. Does anyone know why she did this? I would appreciate it if you know and reply back.

as i read in one of the movie reviews,there was a similar scene in an japanese movie where the actress did the same and ate an old apple and thats coz she was lesbian and very connected to her lover so the scene in this movie is taken from the other movie as a sign of the high feelings from marie to flourine

I think it was meant to be a metaphor for how much her senses were tuned onto floriane. Because she lays the trash out and feels something, sniffs something, reads part of a letter, then finally eats something that floriane had also eaten.
shareadding to all the excellent previous replies, Marie appears to have an unfulfilled hunger for Floriane. biting that apple, makes her touch where Floriane’s lips touched. closer to Floriane’s intimacy, thoughts and feelings. Marie is also so desperate, she contents with leftovers from Foriane - witch is what is wrong with this abusive relationship.

It's a closeness, intimacy thing. Im high school I once almost went to a similar length. A girl I was enamored with gave me a piece of chewed gum as a joke between us. For a good few minutes I contemplated chewing it... yea. Thankfully I thought that was too weird and threw it away but I really thought about it.
