would someone like to recommend me a movie like this?

I really enjoyed this film and am very interested in anything similar. I have already seen *beep* Amal so that's been done.

On the top of my head..

Lilja 4 Ever (Sweden 2002)
Thirteen (U.S 2003)
Jenter (Girls) (Norway 2007)

"Lilja 4 Ever"

You're thinking of Show Me Love/*beep* Amal.

O.P - You´re welcome - btw, I just saw "Paranoid Park" today and liked it A LOT! I find similarities between this and that movie, so I´ll add that to the list.

To "fromthesewers" - no, O.P said he´d seen *beep* Amål", I was referring to "Lilja 4 Ever".

But Lilja 4 Ever is on a completely different subject :)
Well, it also has a young girl in it and like, it´s about sexuality, right? OK - joking aside, I haven´t seen "Lilja 4 Ever" (not the whole thing anyway I have the DVD somewhere) - but I remember it is about a young girl forced into prostitution - well, then my "logical connection" between the subjects in this and that movie was that - well, this is how it is to be a young teenage girl in France, now check out what´s going on in Eastern-Europe.

That was actually my intention of mentioning "Thirteen" (girls in the states) and "Jenter" (girls in Norway) I tried to point to movies that depict growing up in other countries. By which, again, I must say - man, I am still thinking about "Paranoid Park". It really hit a note in me... though I have NEVER touched skateboard - lol:p

I'm half way through Lilja right now and really enjoying it. I got Jenter as well so this is great. I saw paranoid park last year sometime and enjoyed it as well, gus van sant is a terrific director.

reply

Glad to hear, though I have only seen parts of "Lilja" I´d don´t think it´d be an "enjoyable" film? :p But I got what you meant. Where did you find "Jenter" ? I didn´t know it was out on DVD yet?

Hm, you mean like illegal downloads of movies via file-sharing on the internet? :p I know how to do that too, but I prefer to buy DVDs. Now that I´ve gotten a BlueRay player, I def. want to own my copies of the movies I like. I think this downloading really is hurting the film industry, I don´t care so much about Hollywood, they make enough money anyway, but like, independent films and filmmakers (like Hanne Myrhen´s "Jenter", which is a low-budget documentary) should definitely be supported if they´re good, don´t you think? :) Enjoy the movies though!

reply

Yeah I know. : / I agree with your hollywood standpoint but.. I've never seen Jenter, nor would I know where to buy it (I'm from America) but I do buy movies that I really enjoy. Just recently I bought four mumblecore films that couldn't even be downloaded they were that indie.

reply

Yeah, I hear ya! I am not a saint either, I DL the occasional movie, but only if I can´t find it on DVD anywhere - but I do rent and buy a lot of DVDs and BlueRays. I think it´s a lot about distribution, the distribution often sucks for Indie-films that actually are good but can´t find a distributor because they aren´t commercial. That´s why I don´t care so much for Hollywood either, they spew out the same thing over and over again, remakes, the same stories etc etc. and they are making money on it, while indie filmmakers struggle to make the ends meet or just to get their movies out there.

Hehe, this mumblecore thing is really becoming a thing within the indie-filmmaking of the U.S right? I´ve got a film called "Quiet City" which is supposed to be mumble-core, I haven´t watched it yet. I also saw a movie called "Funny Ha-Ha" which must be one of the most boring movies I´ve seen in a long time. I don´t get mumblecore (if it is what I think it is) - film is a VISUAL medium, why make "talkies"? Isn´t that for TV or Radio already? Why make it a film if you´re just gonna shoot two people talking?

Though, I must admit, "Before Sunset" and "After Sunset" are two very, very good movies and I love Richard Linklater for making ´em!

Nice to talk to an American who´s into non-mainstream stuff..:)

reply

Yeah, I once again completely agree with your hollywood/indie film relationship.

And I guess mumblecore is more for a selective audience. I know a lot of people that don't like them, find them very boring or plotless. Like in Quiet City, they just film a girl and a guy talking, visiting a friends house and having coffee. Same with Funny Ha Ha, as you saw, but that's what draws me into it. I really like the reality aspect, I feel like i'm not even watching a movie. Plus I can relate much more because I'm in their general age group. If this genre ever grows on though, come talk to me and I can give you some good recs. : ) But I have a lot of friends that are into good indie films as well, so. It's not completely hopeless over here haha.

I haven't heard of before sunset/sunrise until just now but that's a really great concept!

reply

I´m in the general age group also, but I have a different opinion about the function of film, I feel film can never replicate reality, only imitate it, but the reason people go to movies IS to get away (mostly though) from everyday life and mundane reality, perhaps also to learn something about themselves or the world (or something else) where a movie like "Funny Ha-Ha" is NOT funny at all and didn´t show or teach me anything and it left me wondering why I was watching it. But OK, I respect you opinion, if only because you have proven you know what you´re talking about (i.e. I buy your argument about the mumblecore-genre..:).

BTW - "Before Sunrise" and "Before Sunset" (I think I wrote the wrong title last time - these are NOT the Pierce Brosnan film, which I haven´t seen) - are very good movies and they are mostly "mumblecore", so I think you will like them. Having the same actors and director meet up 10 years later (or what have you) for a sequel is also brilliant..:) (I actually like the sequel more than the original, because they´re older and ... well, "wiser"(i.e. the characters) and not so naive..?)

I recommend them both!

'Halfway through Lilja'? And you took time out to read this board and post messages?

I don't get that. How can you enjoy the film that way? Why did you stop watching?

Di.

even though i finished this nearly a month ago.

if i remember correctly, it's at least a two hour movie. i had to get up to do something and i checked on here real quick. it doesn't really ruin the experience for me.. however sometimes it could. depends on my mood/the setting/the movie.

reply

I dont see how you can compare Lilja 4-ever to water lillies?

My Summer Of Love

reply

I Love this movie, watched two times, and the most similar movie I have seen is called "Blue Gate Crossing", a Taiwanese teen drama, here in imdb it says a comedy, but is realy a real life experience like Water Lilies... I recommended this one.

hey thanks. i'll check it out.

Oh well, I was about to suggest *beep* Amal. Wait a minute, there is another French movie about two girls at a summer beach house that shares the same lesbian coming of age theme. Let's see if I can look it up...

Les filles ne savent pas nager

*beep* Åmål, aka Show Me Love - I thought alot about that movie while watching Water Lillies. It's a coming of age story from Sweden about two girls realizing they're into each other.
Way less confusing than Water Lillies, though, but, then again, I'm a guy, so understanding women ain't one of my abilities!

Check out more infos on *beep* Åmål at http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0150662/

Le Chignon D'Olga (2002?) is a similiar gorgeous French depiction of adolescence, friendship, sexuality and confusion (albeit, a bit older and heterosexual, or though is this movie Gay?)

Also "A Ma Soeur" which is much darker. I recently saw "XXY" an extraordinary Argentinian fim about adolescence, gender and sexuality. Very similiar to naisance des pieuvre,or Water Lillies, excellent film.
