Comparison with F*u*cking Amal

Anyone that has seen *beep* Amal (http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0150662/) and has also seen this movie, can you comment what these movies have in common ?

reply

Beautiful teenage lesbians. Is that enough for you?

reply

I have seen both and yes in both movies some of the characters are young, beautiful and lesbian, but that's really all they have in common. They are two completely different movies. Visual style, pace, the atmosphere, the way of telling the story are not to be compared

I would say it was somewhere between *beep* Åmål, with its lightness of touch and subject matter, and some of Catherine Breillat's stuff, in terms of its frank but honest take on sexuality. However I was actually pleasantly surprised by just how fresh and original it felt. I'm really looking forward to seeing more stuff from Sciamma. P.S. I just found out that Naissance des pieuvres directly translates as birth of the ocupuses! How weird is that?! I can see why they didn't stick with that title!!

This movie is about sexuality and friendship.

*beep* Amal is about sexuality and love.

marie loves floriane, its pretty obvious

reply

Things turn out much better for Agnes than for Marie? lol

I think the main characters in both movies are very similar, the long suffering girl in love gets put through the ringer ..the difference being the popular girl in one had the courage to step up and the other didn't.

reply

The main charcter gets the girl she's always wanted in Show me love
while the main charcter in water lilies doesn't

Plus the main charcter in water lilies is a bit more on the edge and is alot darker then Agnes. And the popular girl in WL is bit of a heartless bitch while Elin in FA is dislikeable at the start but is more likeable in the ned.

1. Elin didn't have a choice, she was basically forced to, doesn't mean she ever really would have

2. the other one didn't cuz maybe she liked using Marie as a tool or her little pet, this prob entered her mind as soon as Marie said... anything!

even when Marie had had enough, it's like Floriane did just enough to keep her in her life & being her little pet all the time

very similar ye. i just posted my own thread saying so. thought both were brilliant. now i havent seen *beep* amal in ages tho iv seen all of moodysons flicks but i think i prefer it... must watch it again...
saying that tho, Water Lillies was excellent.

I thought of F/cking Amal throughtout Water Lilies. The two main girls in each film were similar characters at the outset: A dark haired outsider who's aware she's a lesbian and falls in love with a blonde girl of some notorious reputation. But of course the coming-of-age that Marie and Agnes experience is much different although Marie regains her friendship with Anne at the end.

The distance is nothing. The first step is the hardest.

Also, the introverted sullen wallflower versus the social (in some sense at least) extroverted party girl. Basically, only the age difference was inverted.

Yes WL is darker than FA (and doesn't have the satisfying conclusion of FA) - but both are such brilliant movies, your life is incomplete if you don't see both movies. However, anyone reading or posting on this message board - probably already has.

"But I have infinite tenderness for you. I always will. My whole life."

It does remind us of *beep* Åmål, but the ending if *beep* Åmål was a happy ending for the maing characters, in that they end up together. i think Water lilies is more similar to My Summer of Love, with Emily Blunt, both ending are kinda similar in that it surprises the viewer that they don't end up together. But i like that they left the ending ambiguous, during the film Floriane and Marie change their minds in a number of scenes, but decide to stick together later, so maybe they did end up together, it's up to the viewers imagination
