Winona Ryder looks old now
I kept expecting to see this young woman but when they finally showed her, I thought for a split second, "Who's this older lady?" OH it's Winona. She definately looks 40ish now.

shareit's because she had to lose weight for the role.
shareShe may not look 20 anymore like she did in the 90s but she's aging very well, she looks as elegant as ever. Did she lose weight? It's never been like she's had any weight to lose but she did look pretty thin here, her shoulders looked incredibly narrow, even with those 80s shoulder pads.
But mind you, what about Kim Basinger here, it's unbelievable that's she's about 55.
The only person in this film who looked older than they were was Brad Renfro, who of course died from drug abuse shortly afterwards at the age of 25. Bloated, sweaty and looking burnt-out, maybe it was just for the character but with hindsight it's so easy to say his death was unsurprising. I really wondered whether all his jittering in his film was acting or really because of drugs.
The fact that you wonder if Brad was acting is proof that he turned in an incredible performance. No, he wasn't the burnt out basket case he portrays in this film. It's called acting. It's sad that it was to be his final performance, but I like the way the movie is dedicated to him at the end. He was very talented.
"IMdB; where 14 year olds can act like jaded 40 year old critics...'
I thought she looked MUCH older in JJ's Star Trek.

She was meant to look like a middle-aged woman in Star Trek (although it wasn't that convincing). Zachary Quinto who plays the son of her character is only 6 years younger than her.

Isn't it because in general in Hollywood there aren't as many strong female parts as male parts? Also don't you think older male actors as well have a hard time finding films worth doing? Jon Voight, one of the best actors of the 70s, nowadays often just plays 2-dimensional senior establishment figures in mainstream films. And Michael Caine has from being a sexy superstar in the 60s to playing Batman's elderly butler (although he has just done Harry Brown).
It's often been said it's very difficult for a middle-aged actress to get decent roles unless she's Meryl Streep. I'd also add to that list Judi Dench (who is getting on now) and Frances McDormand.

I noticed it. She hadn't aged well and I think her public problems had a lot to do with that. I doubt many of the viewers of this movie even realise just how big of a movie star she was during the late eighties and early nineties.
