Winston is the only redeeming character

in this ridiculous movie.

The rest just make extremely poor choices and deserved the consequences. I wanted to scream at them for being so idiotic!

You really need to work on your ability to see things from other points of view. It'll help you enjoy things like this a little more.

reply

Yes, I second this. Keep an open mind.

"The rest just make extremely poor choices and deserved the consequences."

Agreed. They were remarkably stupid for their age.

reply

Scream away. I won't hear you.

reply

Agreed. The 2 sisters were idiots. Leaving the kid in a hot van with the windows closed sort of made me hate the main chick. The other was just a screw up.

Losing her mother at a young age, growing up in a disfunctional home, having to be a caregiver of her younger sibling, having a child out of wedlock and having an adulterous relationship, yet; Rose perservered and worked in order for her child to have an acceptable education. In my mind, someone who puts others in front of themself is an admirable person.

Let's not forget Rose's father whom sold his house to pay-off his daughters' debt and finance the second-coming of the business.

What gave you any indication that the weather was hot throughout the movie? I never saw any character wearing shorts and in many scenes the characters were wearing jackets.

reply

Not to mention that the kid was old enough to open the door and get OUT of the van if he got too hot. It's not like she left a baby or toddler strapped in a car seat.

reply

You hate too easily. A kid who is old enough to roll down a window or open the door is not in danger from being left alone in the vehicle, even in hot weather.

I think the point of the movie was that we're all flawed, but we can't let our own flaws (or those we see in others like our mothers or sisters) make us believe we're losers or that we can't overcome life's obstacles & strive for success.

reply

Even if you are, in fact, a loser? 😄

Sounds like you took the film too seriously. Its a comedy and a very good one I must say. I liked it a lot....

This movie takes place in February (look at the scene where Rose gets the baby shower invitation) so leaving a what...9 or 10 yr old?...in the car is probably not going to roast them.

Also, I thought all of the characters were very average everyday people, with a few quirks...the kind of characters most people can empathize with. I know I can definitely understands Rose's character much more than her old high school "buddies" with their matching blond hair, Mcmansions and vapid facial expressions...

I don't know if I would say I feel the same way, but I did think that Rose's affair with Mac ended for the wrong reasons. Maybe I'm just not looking into it enough, but she said something like, "This isn't what I want anymore," which is really selfish--they made his wife out to seem like some sort of b*tch, when, hello, she's being cheated on...

And I agree, Winston was my favorite character, although I do love Emily Blunt in pretty much everything she's in (I loved her outfits in this movie, too!). I was sort of disappointed when nothing happened with Winston and Rose, just because it seemed like they were heading in that direction. Nothing really happened with Winston at all. I thought we'd AT LEAST find out what happened to his arm. I was thinking maybe he didn't have an arm in reality, but he does! So what's the deal?!?!

Overall rating: 6/10. Not a great film.

This movie is about dysfunctional people that were raised by dysfunctional people. Why expect more from these trainwrecks? They are living their lives and trying to make their lives better. If you look around, there are a lot of adults with children making dumb mistakes and decisions, so the movie isn't all that ridiculous.

Winston seems like a nice guy, but he's probably got some baggage, too. For all we know he could've lost his arm from a car accident, an airplane modelmaking incident, or from life and death struggle with his last victim.
