He was with her first. Remember they were high school sweethearts, she had his son, but he for whatever reason ended up with someone else - probably someone financially better, socially better and that's why in one of the scenes she asks him why he chose her (his wife) over her to marry. She was stupid, but eventually she ended it - she wasn't the smartest person out there, but she sort of pulled it together, moved on and that's the real story here.

I didn't mind it. While I am certainly not excusing Rose's actions, I think it added to the development of her as a character, someone who was flawed and didn't always take the "correct" course in life, but wanted to better herself and rise above it whether that "it" was of her own making or that of the situation, as can also be interpreted.

Our entire nation is one of people making excuses myself included. I like movies where people have a difficult time but do the right thing in the end. She sorta did the right thing in this movie but not really in any heroic way.

If you always say to yourself, "Well, evil is typical, I'll go ahead and do wrong all the more since after all, it's pretty hopeless that anyone will ever do the right thing" - then I suggest you reassess your life.

And if you have kids, I suggest you make sure they have some positive role models in their life.

Most of us spend our lives telling and hearing polite lies. I have no interest in these. I've heard and told plenty of them in my life. If the comment doesn't apply, blow it off. What are you worried about?

I didn't assume anything, I said if you have children I suggest you make sure you have positive role models for them - it would be ideal if that's you, maybe it is. How would I know.

But you said things about realism. I tell my kids things like this all the time and when they say something like, "everybody else does it" - (they rarely say this anymore) - I say, "Who cares what everyone else is doing - all that matters is what is right."

Man, that is bad parenting.

You have to EXPLAIN the concept of moral relativism. Even if they are four. How else are you going to let them know how superior you are?

I always wonder how people who believe in the bible can reconcile the terrible things it says as well as the good things. Can we assume the things like slavery, not wearing mixed clothing materials, not making graven images or women being unclean is just not relevant anymore?

Isn't it all or nothing? Like, if you believe the bible you abide by everything it says? I wonder about this.

Some people are black and white on the issue - you either believe everything or believe nothing. Those people are called fanatics and largely do not represent the whole.
The OP is talking about using the Bible as a moral guide and I would logically assume he's talking about The Golden Rule and The Ten Commandments rather than the laws of Abraham. While we read The Old Testament for history, Christianity is not Judaism even if they both share roots. Therefore, expecting Christians to adhere to all of the Jewish laws is a bit of flawed thinking.

Personally, I believe in the Bible as a historical reference that's gone through many revisions and edits. However, this historical reference offers some pretty good advice on how to be a decent human being once you wade through all the obsolete bits.

"Protagonist", "Heroic"? Man, this is an antiquated concept that a story has to have a protagonist and atagonoist. The world has evolved and many stories reflect that people and the world are all shades of gray rather than black and white. If every movie had a female "homewrecker" than I would say that maybe film-makers had an agenda but there are not.

The movie was a bit heavy handed but pretty realistic in it's portrayal of how screwed up some people and families can be. The whole Sunshine Cleaning title is not only about the company but about the cleaning out all the emotional baggage they all were carrying. It was kind of like their lives were a crime scene and they went in and cleaned it up and opened up the windows to let the sunshine in. Again, a little heavy handed and tied up at the end with a bow but still far more realistic.

Don't get me wrong, I liked the movie. But would you say that a celebrated liberal psychology and sociology professor from an ivy league university is likely to hold antiquated views?

Phillip Zimbardo from Stanford (famous Stanford Prison Study) uses the term Heroic in his latest book and holds it up as one of the most important concepts in society.

He spoke about heroism in a antiquated TED talk because TED is so old-school. It only had 6 million views, because of all those antiquated people on the net.

No. It's a movie; a story, not a best friend or spouse that is cheating on anyone. I'll bet you're already to start preaching to us. This is a movie review forum, just in case you didn't know.

Reason 666 it's harder to find folks with whom to discuss film .... preachers, bored angry people, folks who need therapy and think this is their support group, etc. .... sad. Makes me appreciate the few who actually intelligently discuss movies on this forum.

No. It speaks to the character's low sense of self worth that she's satisfied being a mistress to her highschool sweetheart instead of pursuing a legitimate relationship.

Show me a movie whose character don't have flaws and I'll show you a really boring and pointless movie.

This character is aware of her problem which is why she is speaking into the mirror. I think she grew a lot and her father manned up and supported what was a successful business venture. She also invited the clerk to her son's birthday party. He seemed like a good man.

I did not mind it at all that Rose was having a relationship with a married man.

Rose needed some connection as a person.That came through Mac,her high school sweetheart.They were encouraging each other and providing advices in terms the challenges that they both face in life.Basically,it was he who gave her the idea that she get into the biohazard removal business.

Also, Rose knew that what she is doing is a mistake through her positive affirmations in front of the mirror.In the latter part of the movie,she also broke the affair up.This was one of the character development of the movie.

The moment I found out about their affair.....i was like *beep* them both.

and rest of movie I kept cussing bad luck to that b*tch.
