Spoiler: Yes, I can understand the realistic seque from skinning animals to skinning humans in such an unforgiving if beautiful climate, but what about the mother-daughter love so much on display?
Is this just madness, or is it based on some arctic fable I've never heard of?

And why is Sean Bean's character so dense to the problems he's causing? Does he thinks the mama's silence means acquiesence?

I wondered about this too! It certainly feels like a kind of Inuit fable.

Especially the ending it's almost like a skin changer, as if she not only slipped on her face but also her body. Her hands changed too from old hands too new, like she was consuming her daughter to take her place.
