Turned it off when...

...the asian girl ran up a hill during the gunfight in the blizzard and chanted in chinese... all of a sudden 3 yetis came busting around the corner to help... it lost me there

reply

Funny, that's exactly when I turned it off also. I enjoyed the first two Mummy flicks, but this one was just terrible.

reply

Totally agree! The first was a "good" movie, the second was just ridiculous fun with some bad CGI, but this one... It felt like it was making fun of itself unintentionally... Like 1/10.

Bravo young man. My sentiments exactly. But I would say it sounded "intentional" to me. Example. The Yeti appear and Evy has to explain what they are. And then, Lin grunts at the Yeti and O'Connell says, "She speaks Yeti?" and Alex says "Apparently". Kinda sounds like they have to explain the stupidity as it arises. Since I was able to sit through the whole movie, I gave it a 4/10.

I don't like the film very much and am not defending it, but the poking fun at itself was intention.

Like when Evy says 'in fact I can confirm that she was a totally different person' during the book signing. It was a joke referring to the fact that the actress has changed.

I left the theatre straight after that scene.

I was turned off when they announced it and I saw that Rachel Weisz wasn't there. I love the first one, its one my favorites, i also liked the second one. I wasn't expecting much from this and I got what i was expecting. Very disappointing.

This movie didn't pass my " 20 minute " mark.. the point at which I am into the movie or not. So I thought I'll try again, this time I got a bit further but I just didn't take to Rachel Weiz's replacement (Maria Bello). I don't know Bello and this is not a personal attack on her, but I found her character portrayal of Evelyn O’Connell very wooden... soulless.

I very much enjoyed the first two Mummy movies and have them in my collection ... I couldn't stand this movie and gave away my DVD I purchased.

Bring back Rachel Weiz

reply

If I was going to turn it off when it became too unreal, it would have been when the mummy came to life. That's the biggest piece of fiction in the movie.

But I never did turn it off, because I am able to comprehend the fact that this movie was intended to be-shall we say-exagerated.

If you can't handle a little far-fetched material, then avoid movies with the tag of "Fantasy".

Just because a movie is fantasy doesn't mean it should be completely stupid.

I liked the yetis. It made me want one. Next time someone picks a fight with me I'll just have their arms ripped off. We can watch Star Wars together and it can interpret what Chewie says!

I have a much bigger problem with some of the complete nonsense in The Mummy Returns moreso than the Yetis or anything else in this film. How are Yetis any more ridiculas than the awful sandcastle sequence (the only part of the trilogy I truly hate), pygmy mummies, the blimp VS wall of water sequence, etc? It isn't.

I love all three movies. I really cannot comprehend the hatred for this one- it's exactly the same as the first two. And I feel like if Rachel Weiz was in it, it would be rated a lot higher- I think her absense is one of the only reasons people spit on it so much. It seemed like the second she left the project, everyone turned against it, and nobody gave it a chance.

The first two movies were good, but they weren't as perfect as people make them out to be. They're nothing more than silly, mindless, packaged fluff... which it totally fine, because thats all they tried to be- they were meant to be fun adventure movies, and they succeeded. It makes no sense that this movie (which at least has character development, as opposed to the second film) gets booed and criticized so much.

The first one is very good, the best archeology-themed adventure movie since the Indiana Jones trilogy. The second was all right, but not half as good as the first, but this third one is horrible. It has no charm, no fun, and the adventure it does hve is boring. The music score is about the only good thing. To anyone who hasn't seen this, I recommend that you skip the movie and get the soundtrack.

Yeah I liked the first 2 movies a LOT, I even liked The Scorpion King (The Rock makes for a fun action hero)!! But Tomb of the Dragon Emperor suuucked.

Which idiots idea it was to make the Mummy chinese, mummies are Egyptian, and turn something as epic as the battle between the Anubis Warriors and Medjai into a battle between skeletons and stone mummies, Brendan Fraser doesn't even like this movie, I'll stick with The Mummy and Mummy returns

reply

I agree with that. The Majai/Anubis Army battle in "Returns" was beautifully epic, though I wish we could've seen a little more of it. The other battle in the 3rd movie just seemed like a souless rehash.

There actually are Chinese mummies (Tarim mummies of Xinjiang), so that wasn't an issue for me. I found this movie surprisingly entertaining, considering how disappointed I was with the other sequels. My only beefs: No Rachael Weisz and the actor playing Alex was utterly charmless to me. The whole yeti thing worked for me simply because I never saw it coming. It's not as good as the first film, but much better than the other follow-ups, imho.
