Give it an Oscar!

This will probably be Brazil's official sellection for the 2008 Academy Awards ("Cinema, Aspirinas e Urubus", another Brazilian gem, will represent Brazil in 2007) And I personally think it has great chances of winning.

What do you think?

Eu não gostei tanto assim do filme, mas acredito que esse filme tem tudo para ser indicado ao Oscar.

For me, it's the best movie of the year. Period. Miami Vice is the second. I think it's has great chance of beeing nominated if was selected. There will be other strongs brazilian movies in 2007 also. O Cheiro do Ralo, Antônia, Batismo de Sangue, Os Desafinados, O Céu de Suely. For me this movie is the perfect choice. Maybe it will compete in Berlim Festival in february.

I agree. It should definitely be submitted for Oscar consideration. It's a terrific film that I'm sure they will eat up.

"Bears. Beets. Battlestar Galactica."
- Dwight Shrute or is it...?

Well, it's out!! The movie is going to the Oscars... Great choice, IMO... I think it has a great chance, as it portrays the jewish community. The academy holds dearly films like this, as the board is composed, mostly, by Jews. Think the bald dude is coming to the tropics this year.

Academy Awards released the list of the 9 films that will dispute a place for the top-5 on February.
Eureka! "The Year My Parents Went On Vacation" is now among the top-9 foreign languages nominees for Academy Awards 2008!

The top-9 nominees are:

I'm so excited about this news, though I found it strange that movies like "4 Months, 3 Weeks and 2 Days" and "Lust, Caution", that were certain to be on competition, were left out of this list.

Concerning the list, besides Tornatore's "The Unknown" and Arcand's "Day of Darkness" (and obsviously "The Year My Parents Went...") I haven´t heard of any other movie.

reply

Faraor,
I completely agree with you. I can't understand both "4 Months..." and "Lust, Caution" out of Oscar race!
Otherwise, I think "The Year..." is now near to the Academy award, because the two good choices won't be there anymore.
By the way, about Giuseppe Tornatore and Denys Arcand, I've not watched this movies yet, but as they are wonderful filmmakers, I imagine they must be the best bet, but Hamburger's "The Year..." is, of course, a good bet too.

reply

Cannot believe not even nominated. Deserved the Oscar.
