Confused over the ending (spoilers duh)

Why did Wyke shoot at Tindle in the end? I know there's talk about the possibility of him shooting blanks etc, actually I thought that whatever was fired, Wyke fired at the ground and Tindle got a shock and jumped back (and hence fell over the railing).

But regardless, I don't understand what's up with the shooting. If the wife did indeed come back, one would've figured that he'd shoot the wife instead for ruining his life (again) and (what he fancied as) his chances with Tindle.

There's a reason Wyke has the gorgeous wife, the mansion, and the fame. The bullet is the punctuation point.

Both men are artists, one is a hairdresser, one is a successful millionare.

Their game could have gone on forever, but Wyke made himself the victor by killing Tindle.

I believe Tindle won, but Wyke couldn't stand loosing to him, so, he killed him. Whether it was a blank or not, his intentions were to hurt Tindle.

And to the post above, he is actually a hairdresser in the original when played by Caine, but only an actor in the remake.

I think what Branagh meant it to mean was that Tindle had won the last "set" by pretending to want to be with Wyke. Tindle had humiliated Wyke by rejecting him and calling him a "pouf". Also, Wyke didn't believe Tindle that his wife was coming back to him. So, he shot Tindle because he was humiliated. Humiliation is their game, and Tindle had won the last game. Wyke couldn't handle that, so he shot him.

That, or, Branagh thought that the final "game" was on the audience. We thought that it was going to be like the original, but it wasn't. At any rate, it was stupid and a poor, hollow reflection of the original masterpiece.

I think all you guys are completely missing the point here. Caines character is gay. He has the hot wife, big mansion and fancy toys but he has so much pride he can't admit that he's gay. Why would a grown mans move valued possession be a jewelry set. Anyway, the guy sucked in the sack according to his ex wife, admits that he finds Jude law attractive and tried to get him to move in. Realizing it's another rouse Jude law seduces Caine exposing his secret and before he can tell anyone and win set game match Caine shoots him down. Neither man wins. They have both lost their lives over a women and their selfish pride.

MILO made WYKE think he wanted to be with him, but it was an act to humiliate him. WYKE got pissed. That's it.

If the wife did indeed come back, one would've figured that he'd shoot the wife instead for ruining his life (again) and (what he fancied as) his chances with Tindle.

WYKE didn't believe the wife was actually coming. He thought MILO was bluffing. What will happen next? That's up to viewer.

Wyke would have ample video evidence of Tindle threatening him etc. for the whole evening .. more than enough for a justifiable homicide.
