I'm afraid I have to agree with you. Caine had wanted for several years to remake Sleuth, with himself in the Andrew character. There was talk that Christian Bale would play Milo, which may have been interesting, but I think the blame for this movie's failure isn't with Jude Law, though he doesn't seem to have enough grit in the last act to pull off what Caine did in the first film, but with director Kenneth Branagh. It seems as though Branagh felt the need to tinker with the film, in both the way it's shot, in the way the characters are presented, and especially the pacing. The film seems strange, obtuse, not tense and intriguing like the original.
