Reasons why: the second one was an attempt to catch lightning in a bottle twice but wasn't the cash in the studio expected. Hence, the franchise sat in developmental hell for almost six years before Sci-Fi decided to make something with it. Naturally, that movie was a disaster. It's the devolution of a movie franchise.
