Miranda's cocooning

Miranda's eyelids began to flutter, her breathing becoming more erratic.

The last thing she remembered was that she was just a little girl, living with two men. One of them was named Tom Hollander, the other Forbes McGuire. Forbes was an university student, being gone for most of the day, and Hollander was a teacher, working in the same university. Miranda had been living in Hollander's house, which was located in a city near Los Angeles. There was a lab underneath the house, where she spent most of her time in when Forbes and Hollander were gone to the university. She always felt like there was something peculiar about her, since she wasn't allowed to leave the house and the men she was living with studied her every move when they were around. Even if she was just going to the bathroom, one of the men always had to come with her. 'Just to keep an eye on her', as Forbes used to say.

She didn't even know where she came from. Hollander, who treated her like his child, had said she was brought by the stork. Although his story sounded stupid, she believed it, since she didn't know any better. Had she known the truth, then she wouldn't have believed it either. So it was a good thing Hollander lied to her.

Forbes and Hollander often talked about her when she wasn't around. Miranda sometimes could only hear some of the words they spoke, such as 'DNA' and 'development', but most of the time it was hard to make something out of their conversations. But the one thing she knew for certain, was that she was growing really fast. 'Faster than any child', Hollander had said. This made her feel for a part special, but for another part strange. Why couldn't she be like other children? What was it that was so exceptional about her?

It wasn't until early this morning that she was in the lab and saw something bubbling under her skin. This was new to her, so it made her curious. She looked at her hand, where it felt like something was trying to burst out of. Suddenly, some sort of tentacle tore through the skin of her hand. She screamed as other tentacles were tearing through her face and other parts of her body, shredding her clothes to pieces. Hearing her, Hollander and Forbes came rushing downstairs to her aid, but it was already too late. She leaned against a wall, as the tentacles that were coming out of her skin attached to it, pulling her backwards.

'What's going on with her?' Hollander said as he looked on in awe.

'She's cocooning', Forbes reassured him, 'it's normal for her age to do that.'

Soon, the tentacles started to engulf the little girl, trapping her inside a cocoon.

'This isn't normal', Hollander said, 'this is monstrous.'

Slowly, a cocoon was formed around Miranda. The last thing she remembered, was Forbes and Hollander observing her in amazement as the world around her was getting darker and darker till she lost consciousness.

A few hours had past, and Miranda decided to wake up. She opened her eyes and observed her surroundings. She was still inside her cocoon, lying on the bottom of it. The cocoon was covered with a thick layer of rubber-like tissue, looking like some sort of nervous system, and it was filled with a thin transparent slime-like substance. Miranda tried to move her arms, and realised she was an adult woman now, the slimy substance moving around her entire naked body, making it slippery. She tried to get up, still a bit weak from the process of cocooning, and slightly bumped her head against the thick layer of the cocoon. Apparently, it wasn't big enough to stand into it. She felt the inside of the cocoon with her hand, and tried to push her arm through the thick layer. However, the layer was thicker than she thought it was, so she tried to push her head through it. The layer wouldn't bulge, so she pushed harder, trying her best to hatch through it. After a while, the thick layer finally tore open, air streaming into the cocoon. Miranda hatched out of it, which was easy, since her slimy body was as slippery as an eel. Her wet and long blonde hair stuck to her face and body, but she didn't really care about it. She tried to get hold of the thick layer of the cocoon, having her upper body hanging out of it. However, her hands were so slippery, that it slipped out of her hands, forcing her to fall to the floor next to the cocoon.

Miranda fell out of the cocoon and collapsed on the floor with a thud. Lying there on her side, she took deep breaths of air, since it took a lot of energy to hatch out of the cocoon. She rolled herself up like a ball, trying to get warm. The cold air outside the cocoon took alot of her already exposed body to be accustomed to.

After she got used to the temperature of the room, Miranda got up on her knees, leaning on her hands, and inspected her surroundings. There was no one around, so she just sat there all alone, still astounded by the things that were happening to her.
