Carey Mulligan ...

I cannot believe this is the same Carey Mulligan who played Kitty in P & P 2005. She looked so different but I liked her portrayal of Isabella. She seems to have grown in confidence (and I'm not referring to her bust although that was on show quite a bit!)

Millie, did you see Bleak House? She plays a very different character in that to Kitty so I'd already got used to her changing but I thought she looked like she'd lost quite a lot of weight.

reply

The director of Pride and Prejudice had Carey eating in lots of scenes as he felt that was what Kitty would do, and so she put on some weight during filming. However, I thought she was very good in all 3 of these, particularly Bleak House where she had a lot of time to shine.

Fifi, unfortunately I was away when Bleak House was first aired and so I could get 'into' it as such but I have ordered a copy from Amazon. Looking forward to it - as a matter of interest what is the running time for the series?

reply

Millie, I believe it was 16 half hour episodes. As we watched it when it was on it really worked and I was desperate for the next installment so I don't know how it would work watching it all in one go. However, it was IMHO the best adaptation that the BBC's ever done. (yes I loved Jane Eyre last year but in terms of all round story telling Bleak House was just THE best).

8 hours - goody, cant wait. I will try and watch it in two hour intervals but that just might try my virtually non existent will power lol. I agree with you though, I love it when its shown on TV and the anticipation of the next instalment- its like an adrenalin rush.

It was generally a very good, very gripping adaptation which made you want to watch the next part and the next one after that etc. Some people at the time commented that it should have been one big film and not 16 half-hour episodes, but the story needed the full 8 hours - and anyway, Charles Dickens first published his novels in short weekly installments in a newspaper or magazine.

There were fantastic performances by Charles Dance as the evil Mr Tulkinghorn, Philip Davis as the foul-mouthed cripple Smallweed ("Shake me up, Judy!") and Johnny Vegas as Krook. Anna Maxwell Martin was sweet and yet forceful as Esther, and showed that attractiveness is more than classical beauty - her character spent the last few episodes with her face pock-marked by smallpox scars.

My only criticism is that every scene change was telegraphed in a very unsubtle way by a "Whoosh" effect on the sound. Although this was initially quite effective at making it clear that the story had shifted from one location to another, it quickly became very annoying!

Yes, the performances were just amazing. My husband would have never to have committed to watching something like this the whole way through but he loved it and still shouts 'shake me up Judy' at us all!

I smiled at that cos I was trying to remember what you meant by that, but I've remembered it and have to admit it didn't bother me.

I totally agree. by the 10th episode that "whooshing" had me so annoyed I had to stop and finish the movie later (I had it on DVD). Other than that I thought it was a very strong adaptation. While i'm not a fan of the new P&P I thought Carey Mulligan really redeemed herself in Bleak House and especially in NA. Looking forward to seeing her elsewhere. I really think this NA trumps the older version which was very confusing and just downright odd.

I agree, she did look like she had lost quite a bit of weight. Good performance by her in Northanger Abbey, but I thought she looked better in Bleak House

I thought she was good but I can't believe how skinny looked compared to "Bleak House".

I know, it was quite a change
