I'm glad to hear there is a DVD, at least in the U.K. I hope there will be an American one soon. God knows there is a sizable Jane-ite cult here. And "Northanger Abbey" is Jane Austen's lightest and most funny novel. It certainly deserves a good screen treatment.

I've seen Felicity Jones as a child actor and am glad to see she is apparently making the transition to successful adult actress.

I wish I could figure out the rationale for the incompatibilty of Region I and II. Seems silly.

I just read that it won't be released in the USA until November. :(

Have you checked online to see if your player can be modified to region 0? Then it could play dvds from everywhere, while still retaining the ability to play region 1 discs. This modifying technique is called "soft hacking." Lots of people do it and it doesn't harm the player because the capability is already built into the device.

Just be sure that your dvd player is also capable of converting NTSC (US tv format, somehow related to color, I believe) to PAL (UK, Europe, AUS tv format). You can find out by Googling the model number of your player. Good luck!

reply

Thanks for the information. I doubt I have the technical skill to do that though .

Sure you do! It's easy!

All you have to do is Google the model number of your player with the word hack. If you find instructions, then your player can be modified.

You also Google the model number of your player with "convert PAL to NTSC," to make sure your player will be able to convert to teh tv format.

The steps for modifying your player's region setting are pretty easy, usually involving only pressing a sequence of buttons on your player's remote control. That's it!

reply

Well, maybe I'll try it.

Thanks again.

Blaine, do you have a dvd burner? Because if you want a no fuss no muss way to watch non region 1 dvds, then I can suggest a program called DVDFab.

I have multiregional dvd players too, but DVDFab has been a better investment for me. With the program I can make backup copies of all the dvds I own therefore I can travel with them. In copying the dvd the region code is stripped out too.

You can find more info at http://www.dvdfab.com

The sale on the program is ongoing, don't buy it sooner than you want. Take advantage of the free trial period. Try it out on a dvd you own first to see how it runs. The upgrades are free for life too. It is really easy to use, plug and play mostly.

BTW I don't get comission on the program, I just love it to bits and will recommend it to anyone who will listen.

Thanks for the info. I will follow up on it.

Does anyone know if Northanger will be available on d.v.d. in the States? I myself am in Canada (curses for not living in the UK purely for the fact that it seems to take forever for us to get any good movies on d.v.d! -Actually there are other reasons why it would be nice to live there but I'll leave that for another forum)

This version of NA was miles above the 80's version- sorry to sound superficial but I just couldn't get past the frizzy big hair on both the women AND men. Yikes...Not to mention this version has far better acting - it's just less creepy overall. Anyway if anyone can shed any light on when it comes on d.v.d for us over here that would be nice, thanks...
