I'm hopeful...
that this adaption will be better than Persuasion's 2007 adaption. The Jane Austen Collection was launched this past Sunday on Masterpiece Theatre as most Americans know. Kind of a sad start if you ask me...

I have seen them all and I don't want to give you false hopes because everyone's taste is different, but my personal opinion is that I love NA. I will purchase the DVD and watch it again and again. I love JJ Field as Henry and I liked the actress who played Catherine. It's true, it was not filmed in Bath, and it is spiced up in some ways that people don't like, and it's not perfect, but I find it much better than the 80s version and much better than the new Persuasion.
I agree with you, Persuasion was a sad start, it was my least favorite of the new and I think it should've been scheduled last. I hope that P hasn't turned the non-obsessive Austen fans off the rest of the season. That would be a shame for Masterpiece and PBS.
I actually liked Persuasion last week, but as it has been said, tastes differ. I had been looking forward so much to viewing NA that I actually cried bitterly that I missed the first five minutes! (sad, I know....) I enjoyed it immensely. I thought Catherine was brilliant, although sounded a bit modern, if you know what I mean. I loved JJ Field as Henry! The scenes with Catherine and Henry together were so cute, I found myself laughing. I felt, though, that there was so little time spent on the false-friendship with Isabella, but they showed all that was needed.
However, I had heard of a certain scene in which Catherine imagines herself standing in front of Mr. Tilney naked...I guess they cut that off??
I believe that is a dream, not a daydream. :-)
shareThis version of Northanger Abbey was soooo much better than Persuasion last week. I was so angry after watching last week's Persuasion. I thought I had been cheated. Such a wonderful book, such a horrible movie. But at least now I watch the 1995 version with much more respect.
I was afraid to watch Northanger Abbey this week, but I was pleasantly surprised. Of course so many things were cut out, but I think the general plot of the story was told and told well. Northanger Abbey is a cute story and I'm glad there's a newer, more up-to-date adaptation of it.
I beg to differ. I enjoyed Persuasion so much more. I felt it was more engaging, especially when I caught myself yelling at the characters through the tele. With tonights episode, my attention was barely pulled away from shopping online. It was a bit silly, and unlike all Austen stories. I guess I am going to have read this one, to really appreciate how Austen intended. So, I can only say I didn't really like the actors and the movie.
shareI loved Persuasion too. I thought it was amazing. NA is not as good as Persuasion but I did like it very much too.
shareI think Persuasion was a decent movie if not compared to the book. Being a huge Persuasion novel fan, the movie was, in my opinion, just too chopped up and thrown onto the screen.
The Northanger Abbey novel is pretty silly and simple. I don't think it has the maturity that many of Austen's other novels have and I was surprised Masterpiece was putting forth the effort to do this adaptation since it isn't exactly the Austen most people know and love. So I don't blame a lot of people for not liking this movie that much.
Masterpeice didn't really produce it; ITV did and Masterpiece bought in for the US rights.
shareBoth this movie and the one last week on Masterpiece really seemed like a lot was missing from the movie. For example in this one the ending seemed rushed. I was having a hard time believing it was about to end because up to that point it was really good but then the next thing I know they are wrapping it up. Are there other versions of Northhanger Abbey and Persuasion out there that someone can recommend?
shareIn my opinion, the 1995 version of Persuasion is the best Austen adaptation out there. There's only one other version of Northanger Abbey, done in 1986(?), but I thought this new version, even though rushed, was much much better. The Catherine in the 1986 was absolutely terrible, the fantasy scenes bad, and music (complete with saxophones and electric guitar) a total misfire.
Under capitalism, man exploits man. Under communism, it's just the opposite.
Thanks. I will look into that and I appreciate knowing that this was the best version of Northanger Abbey. That will save me some time.
