I'm really thankful to the people who posted this on YouTube or I never would have seen the missing scenes. I'm so angry that Masterpiece Classics did this to their viewers. But even worse, they didn't have the decency to restore the missing scenes on the dvd release! Grrrr....
Over at the P07 board I mentioned that I asked the PBS producer why P had been edited for the broadcast and she made excuses. I would bet money that, if I hadn't said anything, she would never have mentioned the cuts.
They have a lot of chutzpah to ask for money help pay for more abridged adaptations.
Yesterday, I received and watched the US dvd of Northanger Abbey. I am very unhappy that the deleted scenes from the original version are also deleted on the US dvd. At least my Persuasion dvd came with all the missing scenes, but not so with Northanger Abbey.
As Lady Catherine DeBerg says in Pride and Prejudice, "I am MOST displeased".
i didnt even find out about this until yesterday. i knew that they cut out scenes to air on TV, but i was under the impression that they'd put the whole 120 min on the DVD. thank God i found out in time and cancelled it from amazon. i want to wait for the whole movie to be out. i LOVE some of the scenes they cut out. Anyone know if they'll ever release the full version for region 1 dvd? if not, im seriously considering buying the UK version and getting a multi-region dvd player
Just stay away from the dvd that has the Masterpiece logo on the front and you should probably be ok. I've purchased the US one months ahead of it's showing here. When it did finally air here with the cuts, my dvd arrived the next day. I'm still looking to buy the complete version on dvd somewhere. I think I might have to buy a region-free player and order it from Britian to get the version I want. Sad. I've ceased my donations to PBS due to this and have let them know why.
The full UK version was never 120 minutes long. It is 93 minutes. The 120 minute running time stated on some sites is either completely incorrect, or refers to the time slot the programme had with commercial breaks.
However, even if it's only an hour and a half instead of the two hours you were hoping for, the scenes that you missed in the U.S. are definitely worth seeing. I wouldn't give my full length DVD away for anything!
It's a real shame when they cut Jane's masterpieces in half isn't it? Read the book, loved it, and I taped this so I wouldn't have to buy the expensive dvds. Now that I know that I was shortchanged, I'm going to buy an all region player and get the British version. It's ridiculous, especially after what they did to Persuasion! They hire attractive actors and woo us with sweeping locales and gorgeous costumes hoping we won't notice that they butchered the books! I highly recommend taping the things off tv and then reading the reviews on amazon and then decide if you want to fork over that kind of cash for an inferior rendering of a masterpiece. I saw the BBC production a few years ago and just recently Mansfield Park, which was faithful to the book. I suppose it's best to just view all versions and compare. But I think PBS should have given us a choice instead of demanding 24.95 or more for their books and DVDs that you can get for half on amazon! Tonight, I was expecting to see Sense and Sensibility and it was just another long infomercial on Jane Austen to raise money. I know they need public support, but offering the complete novels and a pitiful DVD for a 100 bucks? If you wanted all three movies of Abbey, Persuasion, Mansfield Park, that'll cost another 250$! Ridiculous! Anyone else think that Pesuasion was ruined by not including Wentworth's writing the love letter to Anne? And by leaving out Fanny's visit to her family in Portsmouth and including the ludicrous scene where Edmund comes into Fanny's room as she's washing her hair? Read the book, didn't happen!!! It's lovely to look at if you're a romantic but to an Austin purist, it's rather silly. Though I really loved Pride and Prejudice! The best!!!
I don't know if you've seen the Region 2 version of MP, charlotte74, but the visit to Portsmouth isn't included in the European version either. Those scenes and the trip to Southerton were left out of this adaptation altogether for financial reasons .
The people have appointed me. I am their leader. I must follow them.
I saw these scenes on the PBS broadcast. Are you saying they are cut out of the DVD for sale through Amazon? Please let me know becuase I was just about to buy it!
I think the link in the OP's post is to the entire program.
If you know your DVD really well, try watching the entire film online on youtube. I think you will discover that there are a number of scenes on YouTube that did NOT air on PBS and are not included on the American DVD version. Several come to mind: bathtub scene, apple-picking scene, etc.
Here is a list of the missing scenes from AustenBlog.Com
–Catherine and Mrs. Allen at the Rooms; they go into the tea room, have “how uncomfortable it is to have no acquaintance” conversation; Isabella and John Thorpe stare at Catherine and giggle together –In the carriage after the ball, Mr. Allen tells Catherine that he investigated Henry’s background, and he is a clergyman (Catherine pulls a sullen face at the news) –Catherine’s bathtub fantasy scene –Catherine and Isabella running after young men who ogled them in the Pump Room –Catherine, Eleanor, and Henry on a second country walk. Catherine and Eleanor discuss marriage for love vs. marriage for money, Isabella and Frederick, and Catherine confesses to Eleanor that she has “terrible dreams sometimes.” –Catherine saying goodbye to the Allens; Mr. Allen observes, “Those great people don’t like to be kept waiting” –Catherine and Eleanor run through Northanger to make dinner on time –Apple tossing scene –Catherine burning copy of Udolpho
i know i just got my dvd from amazon and because i had watched it on youtube i was aware of the missing scenes its so annoying you'd think they would put them in deleted scenes or something
It's for these reasons that I am seriously thinking of buying a zone/region free dvd player and buying those special dvd's from the UK. If it says Masterpiece Theater on the front of the dvd case you can be sure that the dvd inside will have the same cuts that were aired here in the US. That's what you have to look out for, but of course, we have no choice to buy another copy from a someone else.
Buy a region free dvd and buy from Amazon.co.uk sellers. I am pissed I just bought this dvd and all of my favorite little moments are cut out. The part where his sister says "He thought you pure in heart" or whatever is not in it, no apple picking, no awkward tea in the beginning. It is rediculous. I am pissed.
