John Thorpe is One of the Creepiest Looking Men I've Ever Seen

I know you're not supposed to judge on appearance, but seriously, one look at him and I'd be thinking "Serial rapist." How could Catherine not see how creepy he is?! I hope I'm not the only one who thinks so, if so I should feel really shallow.

"You see how this puts a crimp in my plans for world domination? Not to say I won't keep trying."

I don't think he's supposed to be a handsome man, but I also don't think that we're supposed to be creeped out by him from the get-go.

It's another thing I dislike about this adaptation.

Having watched the first season of Robin Hood on BBC America, I was already used to the appearance of the actor who played Thorpe. But even so, while I don't think he's conventionally handsome, I don't find him creepy, either. I cannot say the same for the actor who played Thorpe in the 1986 version.

I actually think they made him almost too good looking. But yeah, he did look creepy. I don't think he is actually supposed to be creepy, just an obnoxious jerk.

I think it's pretty creepy the way he looked at Catherine (that look would scares me!) but

I suppose she never really looks or pays attention at him enough to notice or care ,not to mention

he should be highly regearded in her mind for being Isabelle's brother.

I doubt if she ever think of him at all especially while her heart is preoccupied with someone else!

I totally agree!!!!!!!!

This is awful, but I kept thinking he would be perfect under a bridge, constantly yelling "You gotta pay the troll toll!"

I think the hat they gave him throughout most of the movie made him appear more like a troll... or like an evil leprechaun.

OP: lol I thought the same thing. His introductory scene where he's staring at Catherine & Henry dance.. that was just creepy.

reply

Hahahaha! I can see that.

I watch Robin Hood BBC, and the actor who played Thorpe also played Roy. His character was kind of adorable in Robin Hood, so I didn't immediately dislike him. But in Robin Hood he was loveable and supposed to look kind of goofy.

In Northanger Abbey he did look like a gremlin or something, and of course John Thorpe's personality is quite monstrous as well.

"And then he started cheating...especially at magnetic travel scrabble."

Omg I'm laughing so hard I'm crying

Well, I didn't find him ugly or anything but not handsome either. I don't feel I would have found him creepy if his character hadn't come across that way. I only really found him creepy because he acted that way.

THANK YOU! I've seen this adaptation several times and he always creeps me out. He looks like he could be Dexter's (TV Serial Killer) son.

Yeah he wasn't the handsomest fellow.
