Hep V

In the first season, the fangbanger in the vamp nest says he has hep V, yeah? But in s6 the government says they made the virus to eradicate vamps. Now, am i missing something in that hep v was made by the government years ago and just harnessed it in a big way in later years, or is it a plot hole?

In S1 it's Hep-D, which has been around just like any other hepatitis. It makes vampires ill and weak but would probably take years to kill a vampire. Hep-V is made from Hep-D by the government in S6, concentrating it to enhance the symptoms and be fatal to vampires.
