One of my biggest gripes with this show !!
Aside from Anna Paquin's acting . They made werewolves look like bitches instead of full on beasts... Say what you will about Underworld, at least they did them justice.

shareWith the exception of witches, they made vampires superior to every supernatural creature on True Blood. That always bugged me as well, especially in season 3 when they go on about how strong and dangerous werewolves were.
shareThe part that bothered me about the treatment of were wolves on TB was not their wolf form, they were pretty awesome but their human form. They made them out to be like a bunch of ignorant trashy bikers. This aspect ,when compared to the mostly elegant sophisticated vampires made the were wolf society suffer in comparison. It wan't a good idea and eventually the werewolf arc was the least popular one on the show. The shifters, were short changed in a big way also which sapped interest in the show. If they wanted to focus mainly on vampires, then, they should have struck to that but once they opened the show to other supernatural arcs, they needed to develope those arcs so they would be as interesting and compelling as the vampires.
Their biggest problem, however was Sookie. They never understood her character and how to make her central to all of their arcs. Instead they had to insist on the male character as the entre into each of the supernatural worlds and then connect Sookie to them via her sexual laisons to these male characters. Ultimately ,it ruined the show and turned it into a ridiculous and nonsensical spectacle of sex, nudity and gore.
Well their form bothered the hell out of me... They're suppose to be like 7 feet tall, hein leg walking monsters ready to rip you a new *beep* if you happen to cross paths with them. Make them as redneck as you want, but make them fierce.. I mean come on (literal) wolves ?? Why not have the vamps turn into bats while your at it.. Werewolves always seem to get the shortend in movies and shows. That's why i would have respected them if they went that route and made them just as terrifying if not a formidable match for vampires...
shareThey didn't have the budget to create those kinds of special effects and as I recall form reading the books the were wolves looked like regular wolves just stronger, more ferocious and smarter. The were panthers looked like pantgers and the one were tiger,Quinn, also looked like a tiger although a huge tiger at that. On the TV show" Bitten" it was the same. It's in the movies, where they have access to bigger budgets and special effects that they create these huge were creatures.
shareOh come on...They strayed wayyy from the book after season 2.Even Sookie Stackhouse didn't fit much with how she was written in the book.. No i think the above poster was right. That's why it made for a terrible arc. Anyway regardless if whether or not it was the budget or the book i still thought it was sh!!tty either way.
shareThe were wolf arc was horrible, that we can agree on. Regardless of what happened in the book,as you say ,they strayed far from the books after season 2 and what they did with Sookie's character was horrible too. As I understand Ball's take on TB, there were no heroes or villains based strictly on whether they were human or supernatural creatures. There were heroes and villains within all of the ranks. For the most part, there weren't any totally white heroes either. They were mostly painted in shades of grey. Even Sookie had her dark side.
One of the major weaknesses in the were wolf arc , IMO ,was Alcide. He was not an awesome compelling character and they used him as the butt end of the joke too many times. He was the most visible and central character in the were wolf arc and we never get the sense that he's really a were wolf. The were wolf arc flounders without a lead werewolf that gives a a strong sense of the were presence. There should have been more than Eric just telling us how strong and dangerous they were. We should have been able to feel in in their presence. The other members of the pack, other than Jason Patrick, aren't convincing either. They needed to either bring Jason Patrick front and center or give Alcide better lines and something to do other than flex his muscles, have sex and be the bafoon.
I hated many things about this show which made me stop watching it
1. Was the treatment of the vampires like some abused minority class instead of the killers they were. As a black woman I was disgusted when they used the Jasper dragging murder as an event in this show...and it got even worse with the concentration camp bull sh--. I like vampires too but they are sick sadistic murderers and I fault no human for fighting back against them.
2. Skokie/Anna and her ugly teeth and faces she made
3. Werewolves: you've got to be kidding me with this one. Weakest supe ever! You know you fu--ed up when Twilight can do it better than you.

I disagree with you completely. First of all, there were a lot of Vampires who weren't "ferocious killers". What about Bill Compton himself, who tried to spare his "food" with some "glamouring and even some medical advice ie., " take a B 12 vitamins and an iron supplant for a week." This is in 1982 when there was no True Blood. Nan Flannigan has been watching him for awhile and when she accousts him
says " You don't kill them ". He replies "Just because I need dinner, doesn't mean they deserve to die."
And he wouldn't let Jessica feed on humans at all; forced her to drink True Blood - not too successfully.
And there's Jessica. Yes, once she loses control and drains 3 of the 4 faerie girls. Her reaction is horror. She is so guilty that she starves herself until her boyfriend gets her dad, Bill, to intervene. Sookie finally gets through to her by saying that she doesn't care about Jessica's guilt but about saving her friends. And that Jessica is going to need to eat something to help. Jessica is far from a cold-blooded killer.
And what about Willa and Tara. Even when Tara is a new vampire, starving, she can't bring herself to feed on the girl changing her tire.
And Willa hesitates to feed on Reverend Daniels, even though her offers his arm, because, as she said "But you're a Reverend." Another one of your ferocious killers? I don't think so.
And why about the peace-loving Jamies, who becomes Lafayette's, long-time partner. I'd feel safer with him than with most of the human men I've dated. Same goes for Keith, the dishy 500 year old but looking 27 vampire who become Arlene's long-term love.
Even Eric and Pam are not ferocious killers in most cases. Have we been watching the same show? Or do you have some strange thing about Vampires that makes you unable to distinguish between Russell Edgington and Tara?
In addition to your bizarre characterization of ALL vampires as "sick and sadistic killers", I think Sookie's smile, especially in the first 3 Seasons, Is very cute and adds to her charm. Later on, she acquires a harder look with stragelly hair in Season 6. And the smile doesn't have the same appeal.
I forget your remark about were-wolves.
I guess it is beside the point...but this is the story the author told...these are her vampires...her werewolves...her fairies...and her humans.
shareYou mean Bill Compton who tortured an innocent couple to death for his own amusement? And Bill and Eric who murdered a stripper with Russell and then later massacred a group of humans with the Authority. And then later get but hurt when the government wants to destroy them?
The only good vampire on this show was Jessica, the rest were sadistic killers.

There are no strictly " good" character on the show, humans or supernaturals, according to show creator Alan Ball. As far as vampires go, the only real " good" one was Godrick and he only became " good" in the last years of his life. So good that he lost interst in living anymore.
shareYeah in the recent supernatural shows they seem to use regular wolves for transformations, including "Vampire Diaries", though in that show a werewolf bite was fatal to a vampire (causing an infection that would kill them in days).
shareI agree. Weres are bada$$ for most part
