Don't Legislate Faith

Abortion is wrong. That is my opinion. It is part of my belief. But America, America the country we live in, a country of freedom, must then also maintain that the government shall not make laws respecting an establishment of religion. One can make an argument--see Ron Paul--on a non religous level that abortion shouldn't be done. But the fact is that abortion will always happen, imprisoning women won't stop it, they will resort to extreme measures, backalley abortions, and people who are contributing to society, are going to die. Abortion needs to be legal to protect the women that are already here.

Now you'll say, what about the children? Yes, the loss of unborn children may be sad, but what lost is it really? A life. We have millions of people across the world starving to death--tens of millions--what about these people. "Well we're trying, we have missionaires, support, and aide?" you might say. And yes you do. But if in america the number is actually in the millions a year of infants being killed. If all of these children are born, within twenty five years we would see a fluctuation of nearly forty million a year. The world is getting hotter, flatter, and people are starving as is. We can't take care of the poor, we don't want to support children when they're born, we don't want to give health care to everyone so a woman can have a child without cost to her, we don't want to give leave to a woman for a year like almost every other country does. You don't want to teach safe sex, or give free condoms and birth control. These concepts are not shared by everyone who is against abortion. Let's make that clear. There are people who don't believe in God, who believe people should have all the safe-sex they want, and be taught about safe sex, and not have abortions. And that is an opinion. It is a belief.

The greatest way to prevent abortion is to prevent unwanted pregnancy. People are against the morning after pill, because they believe that once the sperm meets the egg it's a life, this I would maintain isn't true. Also, to say a woman must carry her rapists childs, a child concieved in incest against her will, takes a form of stupidity greater than any I can believe.

Also, for these people who believe that abortion is wrong, then start adopting children out of American orphanages, all these unloved children not given a proper chance. Now I'm not saying they would've been better off dead, that's not it at all though someone will probably try to say that. I'm saying that if you're not going to step-up then shut-up. Also, stop attacking sex education, sexual protection, and sex in general. If I had to choose between the world the Christians are trying to create, and the world we live now, there would be no contest in what world I'd prefer--it would be godless and there would be a lot of sex. Everyone has the right to their opinion, but you don't have the right to legislate faith. Faith has no place in the halls of politics and politics nor religion have any place in public health and education. Common sense does.

Away from religion, common sense tells us we're animals. No better than a monkey or zebra or a tiger. Just able to believe ourselves better. Common sense tells us we're cold and cruel to the living, the hungry, the poor, and the different. Common sense tells us that if you're against abortion, pro-life, then you have to be pro-gun control, against war, against the death penalty, against starvation, pro universal healthcare (so people live longer), pro all forms of prolonged life. Common sense tells us that this is not the case. Common sense tells us that if we're serious about saving life, then we shouldn't focus on abortion first, but should help all the living first. Until things like this are answered, I do believe that abortion isn't as great a problem as people make it out to be.

Thank you, Writer, for your insightful post. I really wish more people would understand ALL of the ramifications behind a black and white "Ban Abortion" argument. Sadly, many of them don't.

I agree, nobody thinks abortion is a "good" thing. I know a few women who've had one and not one of them celebrated it or enjoyed the experience. Our focus should ultimately be prevention of unwanted pregnancy (and prevention of Sexually Transmitted Diseases while we're at it) period.

Should abortion become criminalized, who would we prosecute? Just the women seeking the abortion? How about the man who impregnated her? What about the doctor offering services illegally? What about the friends of the women who supported her "illegal" decision?

If abortion was criminalized, some people may argue that birth control should also be illegal. Two of the most popular forms of modern birth control used world wide do not actually prevent conception; rather, they prevent the fertilized egg from implanting successfully in the uterus. Will those who believe life begins at conception also want to ban these forms of birth control?

Some Pro-Life supporters may argue criminalizing birth control is going too far. But I guarantee you some would not when fully educated on exactly how most forms of birth control really "prevent" pregnancy. Who is right? Who is wrong?

Should we criminalize the sex act next? Should we license people to engage in sexual activity, and only license those who are married, living the status quo and can financially support any and all children they may conceive?

I said it in another thread, but I'll repeat here: What will we do with the millions and millions of unwanted and unplanned children that are born each year should abortion be criminalized?

I have to agree with the OP on this. We have much bigger fish to fry than this issue. Accessible, affordable and reliable health care for all is a huge concern in the states today. Homelessness, poverty and disease in my country and abroad is a true crisis.
