Cultural Difference?

Francis: "These people are beautiful."
Peter: "They're playing cricket with a tennis ball."

Is this something that is really bizarre, endearing, mystifying to Americans?

This observation and the way it is described always leaves me puzzled.
Is it really that an unusual and noteworthy sight for an American to observe?

Or, perhaps, am I missing a deeper/symbolic element of this small piece of dialogue?

I think the point is just to contrast the brothers' privileged upbringing in a wealthy family with the people that they see in India.

I think so much of the symbolism in this movie is about trying to rid themselves of the baggage of their background, symbolised by their father's absurdly big and ridiculously garish luggage set. It's the sort of thing that some rich people buy just because it's more expensive.
