Joe Manganiello on his character and the ad-lib that changed the movie

The "True Blood" star talks about how an improvised scene led to a complete change in the character he was playing and the movie that was made, as well as his lifelong love of Pee-Wee, being a fact-checker on set and the craziest day of filming:

Is Joe Manganiello HOT or what??

reply

Awesome. . . Obviously, Joe is hot as all get out, but people underestimate his acting ability; I loved True Blood, and him as Alcide, but I don't really think he got to show any real range based on lack of character development and a show that jumped the shark just as soon as he was getting real screen time. He truly has excellent comedic timing (HIMYM). Joe also really impressed me with his dramedy performance guest starring on MOM.

reply

He plays himself in this movie and a slight variation of himself in his other roles. I don't think his "acting" ability is underestimated at all. How hard is it to play yourself?

reply

I don't know ... are you having a sufficiently difficult time playing yourself right now? Or is acting smug and superior something you can do without thinking?

reply

Well, you told me! Apparently I can hit a nerve with you and can get you all upset without even thinking. I didn't know that pointing out that someone always playing a slight variation on himself in every role was being smug. It is not like he has shown a lot of range unless finding different ways to take your shirt off and/or playing a some meathead dud equals "underrated". Calm down. No one on this thread said not to like him, just that he is a very limited actor considering these seem to be the only kind roles he is able to nab even though he has been in the biz for a while and seems to be heavily promoted.

reply

Apparently you are the one with your panties in a twist. When you're rude and snark in your response, expect the same. Now, I have things much more worthy of my time than continuing this with you. Off you go!

reply

You sad little person. Trying to run someone off a public message board because I said some actor is very limited? Is he kin or something? Take that to a fan page, not imdb. It is not like I lied about his career or said something untrue. Hey, he has done well for himself basing his career on taking off his shirt in comedies while playing basically himself. I must have missed those other great revelatory, complex performances you wrote that he has been giving but have gone unnoticed.

Pop off. You were a snot and I called you on it. Opinions don't need critiques -especially from awful people like you. I'm bored with you and this discussion. Take your sanctimonious crappie away from me ... welcome to ignore.

Of course you'll have to have the last word but at least I won't have to see it.

PS I'm positive my life is way better than yours and it's far from sad. But nice try. Bugger off.

reply

"Snot"? Aww, someone is mad. I don't ignore because I am not afraid of someone (or anyone) on a message board fantasying over a himbo. I don't even know why you are so upset about people disagreeing that he has some unappreciated acting talent, especially when the most people can talk about him is that he has a hot body. I actually think it is funny.

And yes, your life is pretty said when you get hopping mad about a poster being critical about some minor celebrity's acting ability.

Unfortunately his character didn't work- it was the only real misfire. After he reveals he is playing himself, there's an undeniable douchiness to his scenes. They should have just had him pllay a biker.

You could not be more wrong. The dream scenes are laugh-out-loud funny and he makes the final act work - he's hilarious, charming and very likable. As Pee Wee's best friend, he has to be.

reply

Nope-Joe has limited range as an actor and comedy is very difficult. The movie works when Joe isn't on screen. The dream scenes don't work very well since Joe is limited. Its a shame-up until he introduced himself as Joe M, the show was working. When an actor "plays himself", it crosses a line especially if the character is NOT really himself...

reply

So ... what was the ad-lib? I've seen the movie, and I still don't know.

reply

the ad lib was him giving his real name-it ruined the moment. Whenever an actor plays himself, there is always a douche element there...

This is the first time I've ever watched Joe and I got to say he was great. Who couldn't love Pee Wee I'm glad he made this movie, it was so good. I loved all the characters and to me it was a well made remake. Sometimes when you do remakes or bring in the character again after a long hiatus it doesn't go to well. This one did.
