Funny Bits, Pee-Wee's Character Not Quite There Anymore

The opening set piece was very good. The Farmer Brown and Bankrobbers' bit were teasing fun too. While it's amazing that he could still look so much like the original character, I missed the 1980's version with the crazy throaty squeaky voice and hilarious laugh. And there weren't any of those sassy "I know you are but what I am?" type of lines. Pee-Wee isn't quite a sad clown now but he's a restrained, introspective clown.

Considering he is 64 years old I think he did an amazing job bringing out the youthfulness of the character. The movie was great up until the mountain man, then it just sort of fizzled out. The balloon joke seemed poorly done and took too long. There were no more laughs after that.

Somehow I knew the balloon joke would be divisive.

I found it to be the most hysterically funny thing I've seen in a long time as did at least three other people I know. I was laughing uncontrollably for literally five minutes at that.

The person I was watching the movie with didn't seem to get it at all though.

I think it's one of those love it or hate it things.

The extreme silliness of it is what make it chuckle-worthy.....how absurdly long they let the joke go is what made me actually laugh. Pee Wee is so silly to begin with - hard to imagine Pee Wee fans wouldn't like it.

The snake world bit.
Just thinking of that makes me chuckle.
Subtle and genius.

Yea, you hit that right on the nail... the essense of pee wee was hardy there.

well said, OP. first half of this movie was terrific. last half not so much.

And PeeWee is different. that said, though, artists do change. Think early, Freewheelln' Bob Dylan vs "Blood on the Tracks" vs "oh Mercy." this PeeWee isn't bad. just not early PeeWee.

but the writing on this movie left a lot to be desired.
