What did your parents think about you watching Pee-wee Herman?

My father haaaaaated him! We changed the channel whenever we heard his footsteps coming upstairs. (Then again my father hated everything) My mom didn't care. Every kid I knew, watched that show and when the whole "caught jerkin off at a movie theatre" rumor spread during the sad no internet days, booooy was my dad happy he could say, *insert jerk dad voice here* "I knew he was a BEEP! I told you I don't want you watching that idiot! Especially now!"

What did my parents think about me watching him? Let me tell you what they thought:

I was sitting in the movie theater with my parents at the time, looking over several rows and recognizing Paul Reubens watching the screen by himself. He kept making furtive glances over his shoulders while his right arm grew more jittery.

After pointing Pee-Wee out to him, Father said: "Watch him, son. Watch that man throw his life away." Minutes later police had caught him and slapped on the cuffs.

My parents shook their heads in pity as the vice cops hauled away an idol of my childhood innocence. With a consoling tone, again my dad spoke: "Some people are just begging to get caught. You should learn from this example today, son. Your mother and I are doing what's known as the popcorn trick."

I am back 5 days later and all I got here is a couple replies! I think after Fred Burroughs creative post, no one felt they could top that one. Well done Fred, you must be related to William S. ;)

I'm replying, so what the hell you talking aboot? ...and my mom loved pee wee's big adventure. My father and I aren't close and like literally never talk, so no clue what the bastard thought.

Considering my folks are both planning on watching the new movie later tonight, I don't think they care at all that their 27-year-old son is watching Pee-Wee. The original film was great and his show was fantastic. It's a character that has a fun all ages appeal.

The vibe I get is some parents must have been afraid Pee-wee would turn kids gay because of his effeminate mannerisms.

So far I'm the only one I guess, I'm surprised.

Yes HellboundHero, exactly! I didn't want to get specific but... anytime Pee-Wee Herman was mentioned, the word "fa__ot" was usually accompanied. (This also applies to Prince, the incredibly talented musician we recently lost). In my city, most kids did not often admit to liking the show. Everyone thought he was a real person! This was a time when many people used the word, "retarded" as an insult.

Thank goodness for the internet! The time of people believing everything on tv is ending and the truth is at it's most easiest to find. I only wish I could grow up during this time that my niece is. Just having an iPhone would have been a huge help during my awful upbringing. I recently brought it up to my mom how practically everything my father said & taught us was wrong and thank goodness I rebelled!

I don't remember my parents having any problem with him, and they bought me a few toys. I do remember growing out of him pretty quickly and sometimes I wonder if they influenced me to after Paul Reubens was arrested. I also remember a couple times of coming home and finding the Playhouse scooter mysteriously broken. It probably got left out in the middle of the floor and stepped on, but you never know.

^^^ likely woke my neighbours up with loud guffaws at 2.40am with that comment. I dare not ask if the broken scooter incident has affected your development or caused traumatic stress.

Because she knew that she wouldn't be able to pry me away from the tv when the show was on to go shopping with her. She was a fan of the show though.

I *HAD* ALL of the Pee-Wee merchandise (playhouse playset, talking doll, child size Chairy), I say HAD b/c my parents were part of the "BURN HIM" crowd right after it all dbroke. Once the dust settled & the REAL story came out it was too late. HOWEVER, when the DVDs hit, I got those for Christmas & my Christmas Eve birthday, on top the fact that we've seen movies like MYSTERY MEN b/c of him& my mom bought me a DVD of his broadway show!

I fell asleep during INCEPTION BUT I FEEL like I still saw it!

reply

My Dad and Uncle loved him and did not freak out about the incident.

My mom bought the box set when they finally released his show on VHS.
