The red lipstick reference

Frances should have just left therapy when Paul messed-up like that. It's not like Frances told him so much information that he would easily have gotten confused. She hardly told him anything, but it was always the same...about her sister dying, her daughter's rejection, her inability to remember her lines, and her general sadness and anxiety.

The more I think about it, the more angry I am at the cold way Paul treated this sad, pathetic patient, who was starving for a kind word from him. It's true that she didn't make things easy for him, but it was his job to see through her brittleness and bravado to the fragile, frightened soul within. She didn't need rave reviews for her new play, she needed someone to be her port in the storm and treat her with tenderness.

Paul made me sick when he disparaged her to Adele in such a snide way.

People who seem overly egotistical are often just hiding rampant insecurity.

Paul didn't do much to bolster that ego.

When Frances left, and asked Paul if he had been in love with her sister, she was probably right.

I'll bet the sister, like the mother, wore red lipstick. I notice that Frances always wore pink.

It's not Paul's job to bolster a patient's ego, but to help the patient pick him/herself up. The ego comes from within and should not depend on the comments or reactions of others.

Do you think it is a therapist's job to help alleviate a patient's anxiety?

Neither he nor anyone else can lift one's anxiety. All that he can do is guide
her thinking so that she lifts it herself. All healing comes from within.
