Well I'll say Laura first cause that was a very poignant storyline, and it had MAJOR repercussions on his private and professional life. The whole transference and counter-transference issue is pretty delicate in the profession and it's great to see how Paul has a hard time with boundaries and how he manages to keep it bay at first then gives in to it. It's fascinating to see how it affects him inspite of his professionalism and ability as a therapist.
Second for me is Sophie - Amazing case, and how he handled it. The whole transformation Sophie goes through. How Paul gains her trust and how their relationship develops and how he figures out what's behind her current troubles. Great.
Then Alex, almost tied with second place - great stuff too. GREAT dilemma for Paul - whether to alert the Air Force about Alex's state of mind or to let Alex fly, like he so desperately asked for. Could Paul conceivably have known Alex would crash his plane? WAS it suicide beyond a doubt ?
The couple, Amy and Jake was good, but not my favorites. It was cool that they reached the conclusion that they would be better off splitting up - not every couple that goes to counseling decides that it's better to stick with it. Sometimes therapy helps you make a decision you weren't planning on.

I couldn't separate Mia Wasikowska's performance from the Sophie character, they were both so compelling to me. How she missed getting an Emmy is a mystery. Also a special mention for Michelle Forbes (Kate Weston) and Mae Whitman (Rosie Weston) as Paul's wife and daughter, they were both great.

I almost agree with purple lemon.
Sophie
Jake and Amy (cannot separate them)
Alex
Laura
This show is amazing with the all the cross referencing from one session to the other and allowing the audience to pick up on the connections without being sledgehammered.
But Laura and Alex do seem to be written in cartoonish and stereotypical way that is out of keeping with so much else. Laura especially seems to be an unplayable idea of a character rather than a living, breathing person. Her one good moment was when she told Paul that as an experienced therapist he should know how to deal with her transference.
At least Blair Underwood can take a badly written character and make him real.
And isn't great to have a program that is so good that even two thinnly written characters does not sink it.
Cannot wait for Season 3 to come out on DVD.

Jake's character was so frustrating but so real. His pauses, not knowing what to say, being such a brat. Loved it.
Just watched the first season. Can't believe this show didn't get more popular but I suppose not everyone enjoys seeing two people talking back and forth for a half hour.
