Julia calls sunil attractive

anyone else find that adjective weird to use. I mean I would have said he is a healthy strong middle aged man - attractive was a strange word to use.

reply

I think that was just to show how she sees the world. It basically means that it would make sense to her if someone became depressed if they were no longer attractive (or weren't attractive in the first place).

i think that is a way to make Sunil fits in his world.
Maybe Julia really wish that Sunil find some middle aged attractive american woman, start dating her, change his point of view abput US societty, Watch more american idol or something like that, gain so extra wieght, and finally stop to sing "stuipid non american" songs to the kids.

Because as Apu says: "Who needs the infinite wisdom of Ganeesha when you have Tom Cruise and Nicole Kidman staring back at you from the cover of Entertainment Weekly WITH THEIR DEAD EYES!"

Yes, because a woman, who is married to an Indian person, must be strange if she says that her husband's father is attractive.
Yup. Also, in whatever a way Sunil is a mirror to Paul, it emphasizes to Paul that "an attractive middle-aged man" doesn't have to live a life of anger and solitude.

Attractive isn't always about looks. He expresses himself very poetically when he is comfortable talking. As a literary agent she would see this as an attractive trait.

well, in Julia's defence, Sunil IS an attractive middle-aged man.

It's just the way she reasons it that is well ... so superficial. Yes your wife is dead but you're in America now, you're attractive so get over it and start living the dream and hopefully get out of my house.

On the other hand i do get how someone living in your house and watching every single thing you do might get disturbing after a while.

I suspect that neither Julia nor Arum ever had to deal with so much at once and therefore never experienced clinical depression.

It can't be easy having a parent join your household, especially one as critical as Sunil. He does need some outlet for his energies to divert his attention from his delusions about Julia, except on the basis of what's just happened, it's probably too late.

I don't think the culture that Sunil comes from and his mindset would really be conducive to "dating" in the American sense. Sunil only ever had one "dating" relationship with a woman, and that was an aberration, not the norm in his culture. Sunil and Kamala sound like they had an arranged or at least semi-arranged marriage, which would have been the norm in their culture.

Julia thinks that if Sunil just went to singles mixers for the over-50 set and starting doing things her "American" way, he could become happy. It does demonstrate a gross lack of cultural sensitivity on her part. Someone in Sunil's position, an immigrant grandparent, usually derives his identity from taking care of the grandkids, and from being a wise father to his children. Julia has essentially cut Sunil out of the family because she needs to retain control.

She doesn't like the Indian way. She got Arun to change his name to Aaron. She won't even let Sunil teach his grandchildren Bengali, which would be a natural and healthy thing for him to do.

I'm going to guess she finds the attitude "take no guff from a lady" attractive on some level, in contrast to her husband's "wimpiness".

"Foxy" would have been a strange word to use. "Attractive" was mature and honest.

reply

But wasn't she try to understand why he couldn't live a happy life with another woman? (Besides his wife) Then that's not weird.

reply

I don't think it was odd, it was honest, Julia was a very modern American woman and she spoke the truth. After all he was the father of the man she married it would be odd if she did not say he was attractive … it's not like she said he was hot or sexy. Attractive means that his romantic life should not be over. I don't think the connotation was weird at all … and it is also not like she left it hanging or open by what she said … she very clearly articulated that she felt scared of him. How do you forget that … or miss putting scared and attractive together and seeing that Julia, strong woman as she was not at least fearless in the way she saw and articulated her truth?
