Is the joke on us?

I picked up the DVD when it came out and watched the flick a few times. I'm not a fan of the Spirit comics, so I couldn't care less about how much it deviates from the source, but as I was watching, and when I work up the courage to watch it again, I find myself wondering if maybe I'm approaching the film all wrong.

Is it one of the most inept action-dramas ever produced? Or a sign of shear comic genius?

It's supposed to be humorous and campy. I can see how someone who went in trying to take this movie seriously would have a hard time enjoying it.
