Wow just 4.9 !

That ain't much. Sure, The Spirit isn't a very good movie, 6-7 at best, but 4.9 ..? I mean, the graphics were ok, so was the action (could have been more), the atmosphere, and the Octopus was a relatively great Bad Guy. The whole is quite entertaining, even if it has as many flaws as qualities. 4.9 ?

See that's the thing though, you admitt that The Spirit isn't a very good movie yet a rating of 6-7 would imply that it was somewhere between "above average" and "good". So neither of those scores would be fitting of something that is "not a very good movie". 5 implies that it is mediocre, and to be honest a 4.9 feels more than fair with this in mind. It's certianly not the worst but those who took the time to vote clearly felt it was nothing to write home about.

I usuallly rate 6 for "very average, has potential but also many flaws" and 7 for "entertaining". So I would have given The Siprit between 6 and 7, because I enjoyed it even if it's indeed cinematographically poor.
If you don't mind, could you quote an example of movie you rated for each grade from 5 to 10 ? Out of pure curiosity.

reply

Logic would dictate that 5 would be average.

On IMDB, movies rated 5 aren't "average" ; they suck. No exception I know of. 6 is the everage grade, although in rarer cases it's also the grade one uses for bashing when the film was too complex, too original or/and not enough blockbustered for him. Therefore 6 can mean either "still watchable" or "really good" depending on the subject.

4.9 is charitable (that is using the inflated internet rating sclea in which 7 is mediocre or worse). I gave it a 3 and that was probably kind. The Spirit is simply one of the worst professional (as opposed to very low budget productions) films ever made.

What exactly brought you to hate it that much ?

By what logic? 5/10 is pretty much a fail in most walks of life and is far from "average". On IMDB I would guess that the average of movie ratings is somewhere close to 6/10. It usually takes a pretty bad movie to be below 5/10.
