confused...

I was very confused watching this movie. I had absolutely no idea of what was going on at any time. When Jackson came in dressed up as an SS officer I left, that was the line for me. Anyone else had the same feeling?

reply

not especially... seeings as Jackson was dressed up differently throughout the film

reply

That explains why a black guy was dressed as a Nazi, huh?

reply

Yep.... But I think we're putting more thought into this movie than the director did.

"That explains why a black guy was dressed as a Nazi, huh?"

...He was dressed up like a samurai and what appeared to be a mexican(?) so... what are you saying? It seems to me his character likes to dress up, just because he's black you feel he shouldnt be allowed to be dressed up like a Nazi if he so wishes?

But as you said, we dont need to put much thought into it, its not a masterpiece, like it or dont.

I think this speaks volumes for you:

"...He was dressed up like a samurai and what appeared to be a mexican(?)"

How can you dress up like a Mexican? Is it different than dressing up as an American or a Canadian?

reply

That's exactly why I put a question mark behind it, I havent seen it for a long time, and I thought he may have had a sumbrero, and a poncho, but realy can't remember, I suppose the best way to describe that stereotypical dressing would be a Mexican. The thing is, it doesn't matter, the point I made is still very clear, he dressed up differently through out the entire film, and you feel he can't dress like a Nazi, because he's black.

Well I have gone through and read some of the threads and I think that Samuel L. Jackson's character was originally suppose to be a white male role if I am not correct. I enjoyed the movie and loved it too!

ah I see, I havent read the comics, but I loved the movie too

reply

I loved it as well. And I remember the comic, but I never read much of them. However, it was clear the entire thing was meant to be ridiculous. Remember, the guy who wrote the comic was a big part of Mad Magazine. Tongue in cheek was the big theme. The original comic was a send-up of all the super-serious comics of the time and that's the tone the movie wanted to achieve. The Spirit is being super-serious, super-macho and then gets kicked in the balls. THAT is what the movie is about.

reply

That is cool that you loved the movie as well.

*sigh*

The Spirit was in a dentist chair....and the Octopus came in dressed as a Nazi....

None of you have seen Marathon Man? "Is it safe?" and all of that?

People complain because the humor is too camp but then it's subtle and it goes over your heads.

I was confused about what type of movie this wanted to be! I liked the look, the b&w (mostly) cgi. That gave it a cool comic book feel. But, was this a comedy? An action movie? A Love story? Cop drama? Supernatural film? What? I gave it 25 minutes tonight on the Movie Channel and got the feeling that the writers didn't know. Seems way too much was being laid down. The writers were throwing way too many potential plots at the screen, hoping to see what sticks. Unfortunately, no audience needs to endure that. Pitch your plots in the writers' room, fellas. Then, decide on one or two. Not five.
