Herecles vs. Hercules?

I wasn't sure what the 'Herecles' joke was all about. Does anybody know? Was it just purposeful mispronunciation or is Herecles different than Hercules?

reply

Herecles is the original Greek name of Zeus's son. Hercules was his Roman name. The joke is probably about the Roman name being more common, when most other figures from Greek mythology are know by their original names.

A Lavender Brown? Are we talking about a color combination or a girl?

reply

The son of Zeus and Alcmene was named Alkides, later receiving the name Herakles, "glory of Hera", after the completion of the 12 labours.

I think it's more a self-mocking thing, in his stuff he often uses the less common version of famous heroes' names. remember in watchmen, "Alexander of Macedonia, or as you know him, Alexander the Great." ...said by who other than Ozymandias, the less common version of Ramesses II.

reply

I'm not sure what you mean by "in his stuff." Watchmen was written by Alan Moore, not Frank Miller.

Original Greek name: Alcides

Greek name after 12 labours: Heracles (Glory of Hera)

Roman equivalent: Hercules

As for the joke, it was more on The Octopus' ignorance on this subject.
