This show could have given at least three seasons.

But they've made a mini-series instead. Why?

It was like what they did with Battlestar Galatica, which also started with a mini-series. Had the Lost Room done better in the ratings it probably would have been picked up as a series.

reply

How did it not do better in the ratings???...

I want more seasons)

That question doesn't make any sense.

Prof. Farnsworth: Oh. A lesson in not changing history from Mr. I'm-My-Own-Grandpa!

reply

I'm not a native speaker of English, sometimes I make mistakes. We can never learn a language properly until you come and live in that very country. But you can understand the meaning, can't you?...

Save the Archduke, save the World.

reply

No, I wasn't trying to be mean, the question just doesn't make sense. Unless you're trying to ask how it could have done better in the ratings. In which case, it could only have done better in the ratings if more people had watched when it was actually airing on Television.

Prof. Farnsworth: Oh. A lesson in not changing history from Mr. I'm-My-Own-Grandpa!

reply

I didn't think you were. Yes, that was what I was asking. That's what I don't understand, why so few people watched it, it was such a great show!... I've seen worse shows lasting for a long time, some of which are still on the air!...

The problem with the Lost Room is that it's very heavy. A lot of North American television viewing audience doesn't want to actually put much thought into what they're seeing. That and it wasn't on a major network, so it was unlikely to ever get amazing ratings.

reply

But that's with good shows that networks become major!...

The rest, I guess that explains why Justice and others was cancelled!... But 24 is also complicated to some!...

I didn't find it that complicated!...

If a serialized drama doesn't make it big right away, it's hard for the show to draw in new viewers. If you miss the first episode of this series you have absolutely no idea what's going on.

The thing is, with series and miniseries going to DVD now you never know what could happen.

Prof. Farnsworth: Oh. A lesson in not changing history from Mr. I'm-My-Own-Grandpa!

reply

It was good from the beginning, maybe even better than the rest!... And I guess if someone picked it up in the middle would most likely think that had missed something, but it's not quite that way. Beside, he can catch up in the reruns: in our Cable TV they're allways rerunning shows and their seasons, even some old ones!...

What, they don't even try them on TV? That's monstruous!... Is it too much greed for money or it's just the business that is doing bad now because of all the financial and economical problems? I hope it's the second, and that the new President relaunches economy and things get back on tracks. But a good television and cultural policy from the Administration like we have in Europe could do the trick!...

Sounds like BS to me. I'd say the real reason it bombed is it was horribly advertised. I watched Sci-Fi a fair amount back then and I almost completely missed this series. I think the second encore, weeks later, I caught it purely by chance. Was up late and nothing else was on. Think I'd seen one or two teasers for it before then, teasers which barely give you the concept.

Sci-Fi's execs never came across as the brightest.

No, this show doesn't deserve 3 seasons, it didn't it even deserve the 5 eps it got! They really dragged out the story. Which is a bit funny, since mini-series usually have a very dense and compact story to tell, they don't have to drag the story out (a la 22 eps/seasons tvshows), but these guys didn't even have enough to fill out their measly 5 episodes.
If you want to watch a good and exciting well-made mini-series, watch "5ive Days to Midnight", although the ending is crap and betrays everything!

"The problem with the Lost Room is that it's very heavy."
Not really. Even a 5th grader would understand it.

"The problem with the Lost Room is that it's very heavy."
Except this show wasn't that bright. Don't assume every sci-fi show is automatically smart and well though out. And can we please save the: "this show got cancelled because people like to watch crap!" excuse to the actually decent shows that was prematurely cancelled, for example: Wonderfalls, Miracles, Pushing Daisies etc

"I'd say the real reason it bombed is it was horribly advertised."
Or maybe the story wasn't delivered in a good manner?
I watched this mini-series because of the mystery of the room and the fact that it is a sci-fi. A friend watched this too and we both pointed out how weak this show was. It is appalling that the ratings on this is 8.2. I would give it a 6.5. It SERIOUSLY doesn't deserve more.

I saw ads for it all the time...

But I agree, Sci-Fi Execs do seem dim.

"Let's drop 'Farscape' & 'Firefly' so we can afford to film 'Python vs. Anaconda: 2' and 'Pterodactyl: 3'. Coolio needs work..."

reply

not necessarily true. look at lost and dexter among others. i remember seeing this when it first came on and i cam on IMDB hoping it did eventually get picked up. sadly it didnt. Damn, show had such potential.

What is not necessarily true?
