where did he get the overcoat?
at the beginning of 'the comb' episode, joe is wearing the overcoat. where did he get it?
shareat the beginning of 'the comb' episode, joe is wearing the overcoat. where did he get it?
shareHe got it in the motel room (out of the closet).
Remember when he was shot at and then brought to Kreutzfeld's house? And then, while he was in the closet, he took the coat off and the bullets just fell to the floor? Since it was an object, it was indestructable, so it protected him from the bullets.
ah. ya, i figured it was an object, but i didn't see him get it from anywhere. i guess it makes sense it was from the hotel room....
thanks for the info! that was bugging me!
The real question should be why the coat was still in the closet. :)
shareok, i did ask that question, but just to my boyfriend, not the board!
here is another question, is everything in the room an object? like the pillows??
I wondered that (why not the sheets, the bathroom cabinet etc.?
The reason I gave myself was that the Objects are all the things that wouldn't have been in the room if history was re-written, so basically the Occupant and his belongings. It's been a while since I've seen it, though, so perhaps there's an Object discussed that would rubbish my theory.
Well, the key wasn't one of the occupant's belongings so I would say that all objects in the room are 'objects'.

Whereas I'd assume the key was one of his belongings while he was occupying the room. In another timeline, the key wouldn't have been with him in the room, it'd be behind the desk at reception, or wherever.
shareThe Bible? Ashtray?
sharewhen Kreutzfeld is assembling the Objects to recreate the Conroy Experiment, there is a book (the bible?), and also a glass ashtray. Jennifer had a list at Legion HQ which she used to track the Objects shown hanging on the door in the film (which Kreutzfeld has the original of - it was "stolen"), which is how she found that he had them all and concluded that he was going to try to recreate the experiment.
shareHmm, good point. *dismally stares at the ashes of his theory*
shareI figured that the overcoat was in the safe that he stole. When he reset the room to get the clock out, the overcoat was reset into the closet. Figuring that Joe would then use it, this might also explain:
- the goons weren't surprised that he wasn't dead after shooting him, or at least bleeding profusely
- why they used birdshot (?? sorry, not an ammunition expert), maybe to get maximum stun efficiency knowing how well protected he would be
Actually, the coat was shown briefly in Episode 1. When Joe first shows Lou the room, Lou walks around inspecting everything. When he opens the closet, you can see the coat on the hanger.
I believe that everything in the room is an object. Something like the coat might have been left there by a previous Key owner. If you had the key, and thus were the only person with access to the room, where else would you keep all the Objects you had collected? It would be the safest place in the world, provided you didn't lose the key.
So far, I've only seen up to ep 4 and I have been wondering about the coat as well (no spoilers please). If the coat has been in that room since ep 1, why is it still there? How did Joe and Pollak know its power? It's been mentioned several times that there are several objects that people have yet to discover its unknown power/s. Why would such a useful item like a coat & it being indestructible be left behind in the room? Joe needed instructions on how to use the comb but HE KNEW the coat's power, how? Why even introduce the coat as an object if the writers had no plans whatsoever on extrapolating its significance to the plot? The episode would've run smoothly without the coat, there really was no need for it unless there is something vital about it that we missed. How is the coat vital to the plot of the show?
God may have created man before woman, but there is always a rough draft before the masterpiece
I just finished all 6 episodes, WAHHH, I WANT MORE! Actually, with their revelation of destruction/replacement of objects theory, perhaps there is a backstory of that coat unexplained as of yet, perhaps it's a new object, that's why it was just hanging there? I just can't figure out how Joe knew about it's powers, I can accept Pollack but not Joe as he was new to all this.
Whenever I get the urge to exercise, I lie down until it passes.
Being indestructible is not the coat's power, all the object are.
Thats why he wasn't (very) surprised when he saw the bullets falling from the coat.
No one knew its power. Joe put the coat on because it was raining outside... then got shot later on. He was even suprised to see he was still alive after those shots...
Pollak took the jacket because he knew that the reason Joe didn't die with those bullet was the fact that the coat had to be an object.
"...If you have an issue, here a tissue"
First, no one knows the 'power' of the Overcoat. All Objects are inherently indestructible. Suffice it to say, one could rationally assume it would make decent armor, like kevlar. It would keep you safer from blades than kevlar as kevlar is VERY easily cut. But blunt trauma would work well, and who knows about heat. Just because the Overcoat wouldn't be damaged by fire, doesn't mean that it wouldn't transfer a damaging level of heat.
Second, the writers did have a plan for the Overcoat. It was to prevent the protagonist from being shot to death.
The ashtray's power is undetermined, but it was nailed to the room's door as part of the experiment.
