I haven't seen the beginning of the movie but this implies that Sara actually went BACK into the Vannacutt asylum, WHY would she? After everything she went through the first time and we know she didn't have it with her when she and Eddie got out at the end of the first movie, why would she EVER go back there? And why would she take his journal?

According to the text, the journal was useful for revealing that the statue was somewhere in the house. Also not sure why Sara would know anything about the journal or statue in the first place.
