Interesting Observations

I just spent the last few days watching all 20 episodes of season 1(dedication, I tell ya) and noticed a few things that I don't normally see in US programs.

1. Smoking. Yea yea, people in the US smoke and this was made in 2007, but I don't think you see so much smoking in US programs. So much groups would whine and write their little letters.

2. Food. I liked the steady appearance of food - the cops, the politicians, the family, etc. That's not very common in US shows. I mentioned this before, but I think Americans are generally afraid of food which is why most are obese (or have other food issues).

3. Clothes - That's something you definitely don't see in US productions - women wearing the same outfit a few times. As common as it is in everyday life, it's a TV no-no. You can almost excuse it with Lund because she was in the process of moving and could have had her things in boxes or that she didn't really care, but I noticed Rie and Pernille wore the same outfit a few times.

Considering the series was over the course of 22 days, they should have sprung for a clothing budget for Rie. She was a political advisor and image goes a long way. Maybe it was an inside joke considering Troel's went through 3 shirts in one day.

Loved the series and can't wait to watch the second one.

Welcome to the club of Forbrydelsen junkies! I like your list and those things just highlight the stark realism of the show. People smoke so much cause Danes smoke a lot. OTher than it just felt so real - people smoke, eat, chew nicotine gum, wear the same clothes, and Lund, god forbid - puts her hair up in a ponytail! And doesn't wear make-up! lol I don't think I can bring myself to watch American police shows again - they just look so cheesy after this.

As for clothes - Lund rarely slept on this case, let alone went home to change. Pernille was too depressed to care what she was wearing. I honestly can't remember Rie's outfits but maybe it was just the low budget of the show.

One thing you didn't mention is how the actors look - like average people. Only Nanna and Rie were pretty, with some actors having these very odd faces - like Brix and Troels.

Do watch the 2nd season - it's a treat, everything good about 1st season but in a tighter, faster, more eventful plot.

Agree with other stuff, but Troels looks average???? He's absolutely handsome!

Look! A ladder! Maybe it leads to heaven, or a Bismarckbrötchen.

He is from a family of anything than average faces. Lars Mikkelsen who plays Troels is the brother of Mads Mikkelsen aka Le Ciffre of Casino Royale and Tristram in King Arthur.

They are both gorgeous. The guys from Season 2 aren't bad either, especially the partner.

Hi badjuju,

I did what you did - watch the entire series over about 4-5 days. I found it an intense experience.

I didn't notice the details as much as you, perhaps you do as American TV is more sanitised -? I think these small recurring details add to the depth of the show: the murder being the 'figure' against the 'ground' of everyday life, which involves lots of habits.

Re-women wearing the same clothes. They do! Rie, for example, would not have had an endless procession of suits, just a variety of blouses/tops and accessories. That's real. Lund seems to like her cosy jumpers and of course it is very cold. Like the other poster suggested, Pernille being depressed would reach for the saem clothes for ease as much as lack of interest.

Hi,
I agree with you regarding clothes normal women wear in every day life. Another reason I love foreign productions - they're more realistic. In American TV land, you never see that happen. Instead, you see people who make a working wage dress well above their means. Then again, most Americans have enormous credit card debt. LOL

I understood Sarah and Pernille wearing the same outfits, but Rie was a bit surprising. She's a political advisor and probably gets paid a decent wage. Wearing similar outfits is fine, but wearing the same shirt is a bit surprising. I get that she wears the same jacket, scarf, jeans, but she wore that flannel style shirt a few times. Also did the same with her dress with the wide leather belt. I liked her clothes, though.

4. Danish women love their boots - wellingtons and all. Boots are all the rage now, but this was made in 2007.

5. Politicians wear jeans to the office during the week. Maybe the dress code is more casual over there... if that's the case, I wouldn't mind working in Denmark.

6. November is a busy month for detectives.

I'm watching season 2 and laughed when I saw her red sweater. Same still with really long sleeves. Maybe her mom made them for her.
