I agree with btc8 that Sofie Gråbøl is exceptional as Sarah Lund. She is the grouting which holds the whole thing together. I love it that she, the main character, is at once so unlikeable and at times really frustrating. She does have feelings, and it is possible to see these in her face as she chews relentlessly on that nicotine gum.
Scarlett Johannsson has said that she'd rather play roles with little or no dialogue, since that demands that she act the role, rather than just talk it through. Lund's character is one in which there is minimal dialogue, since she spends most of the story thinking, plotting, planning, putting ideas together, etc, etc. And that can be painful to watch at times.
She's obsessive, rude, intensely loyal (to the dead girl, not her family members), hard-working (I don't think anyone can disageee with that), focused.......... but - she is not exactly a team player, and it is because of this that she gets the job done.
Watching her is no doubt not half as painful as it is being her.
