It's basically The Searchers with vampires, right?

I noticed it during that scene when Hicks and Priest are sitting on the rocks talking, right after they leave Nightshade.

SPOILERS!

Got that too. As well as being a mish-mash of dozens of other films. Lord of the Rings (explanation of the war, etc.), Blade Runner(the vacuous neon city), Pirates of the Carribean, Sleepy Hollow(scene when family attacked to practical shot for shot), Alien(hive), Ladyhawke/Robin Hood(church scenes at end), Mad Max(desert attack), 28 Days Later, I Am Legend, Hellboy...

It's alright as a film, but these seem to be so obvious to me.

The film was a mish mash mess with no coherent ideology. It wanted to celebrate the Priest characters but it denigrated the "church" they served. So instead of the priests being divine they just come across as thugs who happen to fight vampires. But really have no problems killing other humans either.

Comparing Native Americans to Soulless Vampires was just ridiculous. Again, the framework created dissonances. So are the vampires victims of manifest destiny and double dealing humans or are they truly monsters. The film can't have it both ways. If they wanted to make connections with the real past they needed to show these vampires as real and somewhat sympathetic entities.

But all this occurred because the screenwriter couldn't be bothered to create his own stand alone story and relied a cliche story from an archaic and tone deaf John Wayne flick.

This film was a mess. It failed to take a stand on any ideas it presented. But it was a very good looking mess and there were fascinating elements that could have made a great story.

Unfortunately, that will never happen.
