There is actually a lot to like about this film!

Good, concise story telling.
Cool characters, good action sequences.
Dystopian church run soicety was fun - reminded me of THX1138 :-)
Human familiars were a nice touch.
The wastelands and motorcycles and costumes also reminded me a lot of Mad Max II.

Nice and short as well! Whilst the end result was a bit average, I didn't feel dissapointed by any of it.

Whilst I might only give this film 6 or 7 there really is nothing glaringly wrong! Its a stand-out average film, and if only more movies just played it straight for what they are, watching movies in general would be a enjoyable experience!

Cheers,
Thanatic

There's nothing original about this movie, but the scenario and the action scenes are consistent. Karl Urban was god awful though...

Tell your brother he's on my to-do list, right after 'inserting needles into my cock'.

reply

I thought Urban played through to the genre's tropes fairly okay, honestly.

Yeah I thought this movie was pretty good too. I liked the way they made the evil human vampire 'black hat' look really cool but at the same time the main lead 'priest' powerful and feared too. So it was like a 50-50 fight. And it wasn't much of a surprise with 'black hat' dying but I hoped there was more of a chase. But overall the acting and storyline was good. I'd give it a 7 ?

reply

My thoughts damn near exactly. While it is not an excellent film, there really isn't much wrong with it. And I LOVED it on a visual level, from the wardrobe to the cinematography.

Sad story. You got a smoke?

Just saw this last night. Kept hearing bad things, and then ok things, decided to see for myself and I give this an 8 for awesomeness. Sure, it won't win any awards, but it was an above average flick that was entertaining and kept me interested the entire time.

"8 for awesomeness" - love it :-)

I thought I better check what I actually rated this film as... I did say 6/7 in my post, but guess what...

I gave it 8 for awesomeness too ;-)

Totally agree. An absolutely entertaining flick with a lot of cool things and not so many cliches (compared to, for ex, the recent Hansel and Gretel). I especially loved the post-apocalyptic atmosphere (visuals, settings, look of characters..). I might even go as far as saying it kept me excited all along.

I think that the film could have been better had the film been longer since it had a lot of potential to go a lot further than it did.

There will possibly be a sequel, the ending is very open after all.

For those who are into this type of genre this movie is fine for what it is and I enjoyed it for what it was. Oh ya, there are some things that bugged me, and some awkward dialogue here and there, but that's okay... I'm not going to slam the movie for a few hiccups that I was expecting to see anyway.

A thought though... haha... take the Clint Eastwood character from "High Plains Drifter", turn him into a vampire, and you've got "Black Hat" from this movie.

reply

Not bad by any means but dialog like this, "You could have been a priest...Don't let it go to your head." was a bit too corny for the circumstances. There were worse but overall the movie had lots of action and minimum dialog and minimum character development prior to the action. The religious connection could have been replaced with more of an atheistic dictatorship but I guess mankind has always been suckered into believing that their leaders have been ordained by one god or another as a means of controlling them.

Maybe I just have higher standards than you guys but IMO it was very boring and predictable. Like one of the other guys said, there was nothing really original about it. I mean, apart from the aesthetics, it was a movie I would've expected to have been made a decade ago, not in 2011. All the attempts at suspense fell short. There were zero twists. The whole story was cliche and kinda lame.

On the plus side, it was only about 90 minutes long.

I loved it. I loved it a lot.

Yes, it is cliche, it is predictable. it was "by the Numbers"

This was your typical "Hollywood trying to cash in on a trend" type of movie.

But Visually it was amazing. everything looked really great. I loved every single second of the movie visually.
I loved how everything looked steampunk. really really nice.

Also I liked the actors a lot. Priestess was my favorite. Priest was cool too.

I don't know, It was both the cast, the sets and the CGI that made me like this.
