the beginning (or more exactly the end)

Why did they shoot them???Is it because of the password???

I didn't get that eyther. Didn't it seem weird that the soldiers started fireing without warning and without any apparent reason at the begining of the film?

i blame on the confussion in those day. that was the point(one at least)of the film. lots of people died then not because they were terorists or because they worked for the regime but because it was chaos and people in their stupidity wanted to fight something even if it wasn't there.

On the official movie site - http://www.hirtiavafialbastra.ro/en/the-movie.html - the director says that the plot has a real basis: "The original inspiration for the film is a tragic incident which took place in the Romanian revolution in 1989, in which two armoured squads of Interior Ministry troops that went to protect a military unit were accidentally butchered. This episode received considerable media attention."

It just goes to show the level of confussion there was, nobody actually knowing who was in controll and who had to be in cotnroll of things.

I think the incident happened in Ghencea. I was there the next day to see the dead "terrorists" that everybody was talking about. We found out later that the shooting was a misunderstanding, the result of a anonymus tip the military unit received. That was happening a lot those few days after Ceausescu fled, the army units were getting all these calls and tips about terrorists about to attack.
As someone who was living in Bucharest at the time and still remembers the Romanian "revolution" I consider the movie very realistic.
Confusion, shock and fear are key words for those few days in December 1989.

If you read any stories of what happened at the end of the second world war in many European cities or more recently in Libya, or in any place during a political transition from one system to another, there is a period of chaos where the forces that kept people in check are unleashed, sometimes these forces are positive and sometimes chaotic.

I pretty much assumed this was based on a true incident, but either way, this film is just an incredible work of cinema and why it did not receive a European or American foreign film award in 2006/2007 is really beyond me.

For anyone interested you can (for the moment) watch the entire film here:
