Did Anyone Else Read the Ending This Way?
Spoilers below:
Wow, I think I may be the only person who read the ending this way.
I thought Sophie was dead. I thought her husband killed her on the stairway by beating her up. I thought that the sequence of her going to the immigrant's apartment was a dream / heaven. I thought Sophie and the kid on the beach, and the smug new pregnancy, and the goofy smile on her face, and the absence of a man, was heaven.
I thought that the closeup on the word "Never" after the fade out, and the title "Never Forever" clinched it.
I thought that the fish were all about that, too -- sort of an Eastern transmigration of souls read. The fish leave the vastness of the ocean and come to earth for a while -- our souls leave eternity and enter a new body -- and then, for salvation to happen, our souls have to leave our bodies and reunite with the vastness of space -- go back to the ocean.
I could be totally wrong, given all the good posts here that argue for Sophie and the kid being in Korea, and Sophie being with the immigrant.
