Should have just been a Lifetime/Hallmark movie

Reminds me of August Rush which also has an imdb score way too high. Super contrived and schmaltzy, probably the heaviest handed direction I've seen in years, and it treats the audience like they're brain dead. I was able to guess the entire plot just by knowing the name of the movie and hearing the first few lines of dialogue. My expectations were too high since I saw the IMDB rating before watching it.

I'm probably being too harsh since the target audience for this is young teenagers and elderly people looking to relive their wonder years.

Amen. It was like the ridiculous "Architect" expository scene at the end of Matrix Reloaded ... except 90 minutes long.

And my God, that ending... [shudders]

Meh, I actually quite enjoyed it. The kids could actually act, which you don't get in those made for TV movies and the story was pretty cute and unique enough. Glad my gf made me watch it.

I did too. I've watched, or at least tried to, many Hallmark films, and can not for the life of me understand how anyone can say this is Lifetime/Hallmark quality film.

Yes they could, especially Madeline Carroll. Watching her, I was reminded of what Ebert said about Mika Boorem in Hearts in Atlantis: She's the kind of soul who inspires the best in others.

This was possibly too schmaltzy even for Hallmark. Not only was it contrived
and predictable, probably the only reason the setting was changed to 50 years
in the past (unlike the book's setting) was so that Reiner could overload the
soundtrack with obtrusive, irrelevant '50s-early '60s pop tunes, possibly to
remind his dwindling audience of the soundtrack of STAND BY ME.

I'm not crying, you fool, I'm laughing!

lol too true

Why are y'all assuming the movie might've done better on Lifetime/Hallmark?

reply

I don't think this movie would have had the chance to be as good as it is with a barrier like those channels

You think?
