Other movies about growing up in the 50's?
or around that time period. Similar to this one, Stand by me, a Christmas Story and The Sandlot?

shareMy American Cousin is a great one. Takes place in late 1950s British Columbia about a teenage girl who becomes infatuated with her cousin when he comes up for a visit over the summer. It's cute and has a great soundtrack as well.
shareShag - Now & Then, defintely set in the 60's
I love Mischief from 1985. More from a high school angle though.

thanks for the list! I love such kind of movies!
shareFlipped took place durring the early '60's.
shareFLIPPED took place in 1963 and felt honestly dead-on. The '50s culture lingered strongly into the '60s. THE WAR took place in 1970, though it does feel very '50s/'60s -- certainly as 1970 is only a year after 1969 (!). The late-'60s/early-'70s weren't all about tie-dye wearing hippies like some people think nowadays, but they were a very mixed, diverse time, like a mix of both '50s/'60s and '70s (hippie influence). NOW AND THEN took place in the early-'70s too (like THE WAR) but IMO emphasized for the most part the more '70s-ish (if you will) aspects of the era, too much so to be a part of this category, like the girls wearing bell bottom pants and so forth. Anyways, I love the '50s/'60s era and love FLIPPED and THE WAR partially due to their setting. (If I find any more like these I'll post them here.)

shareI don't think anybody has mentioned this one yet: Heaven Help Us
It's set in the 50s or early 60s and takes place at a Catholic boy's high school in New York. It's got the usual kids vs adults sort of themes going on, and featured a number of now recognizable or prominent cast members.
Some of the key cast members are: Donald Sutherland (M.A.S.H., Animal House, etc), John Heard (tons of stuff), Andrew McCarthy (one of the "Brat Pack"), Mary Stuart Masterson (lots of stuff), Kevin Dillon (Platoon, Entourage, etc), Wallace Shawn (Princess Bride, Toy Story series and many more), Patrick Dempsey ("McDreamy" on Grey's Anatomy), Yeardley Smith (Lisa Simpson), and the chick that played Audrey in the first National Lampoon's Vacation film.
Radio Flyer took place in the early 70s iirc, and although many will complain about the ending was a good film overall - that had Elijah Wood, John Heard (again), Lorraine Bracco, Adam Baldwin (Full Metal Jacket, Jayne from Firefly, etc) and more. Tom Hanks narrates and Richard Donner directed.
