They didn't kiss at the end! What?

Seriously, I sat through this (well, some fast-forwarding), not a great movie, soooo predictable, but kinda cute, the girl lead is good (won't be seeing the boy again), many loose threads left by Reiner, but I make it to the end, he plants a tree, that's a good twist, and then, and then, and then...........credits!

Come on Reiner. The movie begins with a big deal (ridiculous as it is as she's supposed to be 6 years old!) about getting her first kiss from this boy, then you don't end the movie with that? Dumb.

I guess it's better the way it is. Come on, it's satisfying enough to see them starting a new relationship at the end, your imagination is up for the rest.

I read the book a long time ago but I'm pretty sure it had an open ended ending as well, so maybe he was trying to stay loyal to the book.

i totally understand your point. but come on, we've seen lot of movies which ends by heroes and heroins kissing. just let one go once in a while...!
anyway, i think, the end meant that they're not only reconciling from a small misunderstanding. they found their soul mate of their life. even if they are not expressing physically, they know their love in their heart.

I really wanted them to kiss too. Afterall Juli had been wanting it for so long. But we are left knowing that they both want it. The touching of hands as they planted to tree though was still pretty close on the intimate scale.

The continuation of the story in my head has them kissing ever so passionately a couple night later after the movie ends.

Exactly, rexamillion! It was a BIG deal for her. The producer did right. He didn't cheapen the experience to give the movie a text-book ending. I found the look on the girl's face at the thought of that kiss more apropriate and memorable then an actual kiss would have been in that final scene.

At the end of the day, they didn't know each other well enough to kiss. It wasn't a "happy ending", it was a new beginning. Juli fell in love with him at age 6, because of his smile and his eyes. Bryce began to like Juli after watching her from afar and hearing all the kind things his grandpa had to say about her. They had never really talked. At the end of the movie, after years of misconceptions about each other, they were finally going to get to know each other. The kiss was coming soon, but that was not the right moment.

Is it really necessary to have a climactic, cliché kiss scene in every single movie? One movie doesn't go for it, and you find it enough reason to complain? It's quite clear that a film can still be successful without one. Given your reaction, you've got to admit that it didn't end up being "soooo predictable" anymore, did it? Discard any expectations you've started to create, and you'll be a lot more satisfied when watching a film.

So right there.

I was also expecting the kiss, and it left me a bit perplexed about the movie finally not showing one, but I totally get it and it actually makes the movie all the more interesting for me.
