Love the movie - hate the wife and kids
I love this movie. In our world of everything trucked into out stores, nothing is grown locally - any interruption to the supply chain and it's CHAOS - this is a possibility (well, not being zombified).
However, in an attempt to make the film relatable, they made a few things annoying and Wirth leaving out:
1) the over protected kids are annoying. "I want my blanket!" (People are dying around you and the world is blowing up, your daddy worked for NATO and dealt with extreme situations/warfare/refugee camps - and he did NOT enact a "family emergency evacuation scenario", like nurses, cops, firemen, doctors do for their families. 2) the parents know the daughter has asthma, they know the USA just had explosions/chaos and you forget your purse in the car and leave the inhaler behind? 3) you are driving away in a stolen vehicle, the world is in chaos - and your daughter has an asthma attack and your nagging wife asks "do you want to be with her?" So you stop the vehicle? 4) You get rescued and safe on a ship and the man who had you (and only you, out of that city) is talking to you about "It's chaos, Yada Yada yada, death, death ..." and the nagging wife says "can you go talk somewhere else (we need to keep over protecting the daughters)?" Seriously?
I am proud to be an American - but sometimes I'm ashamed at how we as Americans lack any form of 'extreme situation survival / rationing of supplies skills' - yet the rest of the world has that ability. Our first reaction is "me, me, what are you doing for me?"
Once he gets away from his nagging wife and annoying kids, the movie is enjoyable.
