I don't know if the character of Karen was just played wrong, or if it was the casting of Mireille Enos...or what. But her character was about the most irritating I've seen in film.
If I were Gerry and she was calling me, I'd have picked up the phone and pretended a zombie were killing me and then hang up.
He could've started fresh with Segen, even though she only had one hand.
