Thirty minutes made me stop watching..(spoilers)

I don't think they should of had the whole 'hoax' part in it, it almost made me just give up on the film.

What they should of done was...

1. Keep the Start with the death and the identifying of the body.
2. Write a 10 minute filler.
3. Go to the party where she sees her dead self.
4. Another 30 minutes along that same creepy line.

Also change the actor for the son, I found him totally unconvincing.

Also didn't really think that the shagging of the next door neighbour was very relevant either to be honest!

The whole thing was basically a knock-off ("homage") of "Twin Peaks".

reply

I'm perplexed by all the comparisons to Twin Peaks. I don't see the vaguest similarity in even the smallest way. (I've seen Twin Peaks all the way through several times, btw.) What are other people noticing that I'm not? I mean, there's not even a hint of a David-Lynch-like technique anywhere in Lake Mungo either.

It's so apples and oranges I have to ask.

reply

Yeah. Is saying it's based on twin peaks a joke?

The anonymity of the internet has only made us meaner and dumber.

Some similarities:
1) A seemingly happy, healthy teenage woman dies mysteriously and is found in/near a body of water.
2) The parents later find a diary and videotape that unveil their daughter's double-life, one involving disturbing sexual relationships with adults who were family friends.
3) The excess of conventionally videotaped material of the girl when she was alive gives us a rich portrait -- she allows the camera to catch expressions she would hide from others.
4) Like David Lynch, Joel Anderson likes to give us low tracking shots of empty rooms, often repeating shots to give us opportunities to spot hidden clues.
5) Both "Twin Peaks" and LAKE MUNGO are centered around a family named Palmer.

I thought MUNGO LAKE was gripping and fun.

reply

Clearly the director *saw* Twin Peaks and got some ideas from it, and the Palmer name is pretty clearly a little shout-out to Lynch, but this was a pretty original film; I didn't see any of the twists coming.

It should never have started out suggesting that this was based on true events. I nearly gave up on it too but the hoax was an interesting plot since the son's reason (Albeit stupid), was to convince his father into helping his mother come to terms with the death.
I differ again though, they should have ended it with the guilt she found about being involved in the shagging next door and had her necking herself. The "I see my dead self" turned if from a relatively believable film, into a poor imitation of "The Ring".
Was interesting how similar the style is to many real life stories on the ABC show - "Australian Story".

I was a bit indifferent about it but i don't regret having watched it. I just wanted to add that i thought the sex with the next door neighbor was an implication that he killed her at the lake. anyone else have that notion?

I thought the hoax was a great addition because it relieved the tension for a while, made it seem more real, and made the actual 'evidence' have a greater impact when it came later.

Totally agree with you razkazz! I think the problem is people are going into this film with the wrong expectations. If you're expecting a jumpy, fast-paced and, dare I say it, simple horror film, then you will most likely be disappointed. And it seems to me that's what the OP was hoping for, because his idea of 'how the story should have been' basically turns it into any other ghost story horror film, throwing originality and imagination out the window.

This film isn't really a ghost story, at least, the ghost isn't the most interesting part of the film. It simply acts as a plot device to focus on what's really important here - grief and dealing with death. The hoax pulled off by the brother was a way for him to get over his sister's death, and to help his mother deal with it too (despite the questionnable methods!). The notion of having a sense of closure is clearly one of the most important elements in the film, not only closure for the parents after such a tragedy, but closure for Alice who just wants her parents to know about her secret. The hoax also definitely gives the final reveal a bigger impact, people here seem to forget that there is actually a ghost afterall!!

Anyway, I think it's a shame that some people here are saying that they stopped the film half way through because they got bored or because they didn't like the 'hoax' element or because it was too slow or whatever. Pretty much explains why we only get one type of movie out of Hollywood! I thought Lake Mungo's blend of genres worked really well, and I'd definitely recommend it for anyone planning a late night screening!
