how did she die?

I loved this movie and it gave me chills at certain scenes and had that overall sense of dread and not cheap jump scares, but how did she die??..Did she just sink to the bottom of the lake for no reason??? Her brother said he was going back to shore but she wasn't ready to get out yet.

They don't really say, for a while I thought her brother had killed her and the family was covering for him and that's why she was haunting them. It could have been anything really, she could have gotten a cramp, gotten caught in a branch or realized that this was it and let herself drown. I don't think it matters how she died though, it doesn't take away from the the movie at all.

My thinking is:

a) she decided to commit suicide due to the events that happened to her

b) she surrendered to the powers that be (and the "warning" on her cell phone of seeing herself already dead) that her number was up - the forces took her and pulled her under

c) she was murdered by one or more of the neighbors - I was thinking this was the direction it was going, the vision of her on the cell phone video looked like she'd been beaten (one of the eye lids was puffy and closed - could just be her water logged body though)

Anyone ever seen "Picnic at Hanging Rock"? This is another creepy film with even more questions than answered. I highly recommend it, but be warned you might have to fill in some blanks yourself.

I actually read Picnic at Hanging Rock, I didn't know there was a movie. I'm gonna look that up. It is indeed a similarly creepy story though I must advise anyone who either reads the book or sees the movie (if it follows the book0 to look no further into the story because the final chapter, released after the author's death, is in my opinion, quite a disappointment. Sometimes it's just better not to know.

The director is Peter Weir (known for "Witness" and "The Truman Show").

I can imagine any explanation being a disappointment. There are hints that it could have been alien involvement, but that would just be the imagination trying to fill in the blanks. The movie doesn't provide you any proof of this.

The film is haunting in much the same way "Lake Mungo" is.

Nice, I like Peter Weir's movies. I just added it to my netflix instant streaming, looking forward to it.

Truer words could not be spoken. The best thing they ever did was take out the last chapter, I wish I had never read it! Totally wrecked the entire thing for me.

Great movie too.

reply

Yes! Thanks for explaining this. This movie definitely had the same aura as Picnic at Hanging Rock, which is one of my top ten movies of all time.

... and yeah, the ending to PAHG was much better left unexplained.

I thought it was good they didn't really explain and left us with a creepy almost sinister feel. There was definitely something unfriendly about the apparitions, and that one hidden image where her face had a skull like look was creepy as hell.

When Alice talks about feeling drugged I thought this was a sign that Toohey had done something to her, but the autopsy made no mention of it.

I kept thinking what the dad said at the beginning was kind of telling about how she died, it was something at the beginning about looking out at the water a moment after matt got out and she was nowhere to be found, while the water was completely still. We just don't know though, that's the uneasy part :(

I think overall her death was suicide. I think the sex between her in and the neighbors wasn't rape and that she liked it and then felt guilty after it and was feeling disgusted with herself and that's why she started to be moody and depressed. As for the tape, I think she took it because she didn't want anyone to see it. In the end when her and her family were swimming, I think she stayed in the water after everyone got out so she could kill herself. The bruises all over her brother, I think was from her spirit and in the end she wanted her family to know the truth about her and what she was truly ashamed of. I don't think she was murdered by anyone. And towards the end of the movie, I felt she was never gonna be at peace because you see her spirit still in the house. It was a good movie, sad, and a bit disturbing.
